I bought mine for $30. I used to think I wanted a featherweight, but find I am thrilled with the 301. Only will buy a featherweight now if the price was extememly right. They look very fragil when it is side by side of a 301.
But they are all good!

Oh there is nothing wrong with the FW's but the motors are the weak point of the machine. If I can score a 222K I will be all over it like white on rice and happy as ever. But he main advantage to the 301's are the availability, the prices are still relatively cheap, and you can drop the feed dogs for FMQ. but you have to be careful and be sure the hook assembly is with the machine, because they will swap out with the FW and people will rob them just for that reason.

Billy

Billy, what is a hook assembly? I may learn something here, and if I get a chance at a fw, I will most likely jump at it but I think the 301's is just a solid machine. I don't know much about the fw except they are very small.

The hook assembly is the doo dad (love that term :D ) thst he bobbin case fits into that spins with a hook that grabs the top thread and make the stitch. The bobbin case and hook assembly is the things that cost the most for the FW (around $150 for original Singer parts) and if you can buy a 301 for $30 and get the same part off of it then you save some serious money.

Wow, I did learn something new. Thank you! I was very lucky this summer to get 2 301's for $30 each, with case & book & accessories. My dh cleaned them up, put some new feet on them and a new plug on one and been sewing with them every since. I take it the fw parts are pricey then unlike the 301's..hmmm learned something new today!

If it has Featherweight attached t the part name it seems that they think they can charge you an arm and a leg. Not fair but that is how it works, not everyone knows what parts will interchange with what machine.

I just read your blogspot and subscribe to the feed. So interesting! Now you have me rethinking about finding a spot for a red eye treadle. May have to move or sell something to find a place for it, but it is so cool!

There is a manual for it on the ISMACS site: http://www.ismacs.net/singer_sewing_...e-manuals.html

Just thought I would tell you about my 301. she came the other day when I wasn't going to be home. When I got home I opened her up, but could not get the pedal out of the slot. Had to have dh get it out. Plugged her in and away she went. I also recieved today the zigzag attachment for her that fits perfectly. I also got a slant walking foot that will work on her too. She sews really nice. DH want me to sew the leather of his truckers wallet together where it is coming apart.

Almost forgot -- hope you are feeling better Billy.
