GEMRM had a great suggestion of the sticky note. I have broken needles due to forgetting.

I also have broke needles when I change. I don't use the one hole plate very often. I have a bernina.

The straight stitch plate is my standard. I’m lucky that my Janome won’t let me select a stitch that isn’t straight when I have this plate on. I find it really helps when piecing together small things in particular

I mostly use the single hole plate, because I don't do garment sewing, only quilting. My new Bernina won't let you do stitches with the wrong plate or wrong foot on the machine as long as you remember to "tell" the machine what foot and plate are on it when you change them. I'm getting better at that.

i never use the straight stitch plate.
i don't think it makes a lick of difference to outcome.
not worth the risk to needles, shaft or machine timing if i forget it's there.

My janome will not allow this if the incorrect needle plate is attached. My Janomes just wont sew until the correct plate is affixed.

I use my single stitch plate more often than the 9mm. As long as I remember to select the single (0mm) plate option on my screen, it will not allow you to select other stitches...

But it's not the needle plate being used, it is a foot that has a single hole in it. Now I turn off/on my machine every time I change a foot and that solves the issue.

Now that you mention it- I use my straight stitch plate most of the time. I have a new Bernina and haven't done much other types of sewing where I need the other one yet.

I thought you were supposed to use it for machine quilting. Maybe I'm wrong.

This is one of the mistakes I commonly make too.
