I use regular sewing thread, Dual Duty, for the piecing. Serger thread isn't as strong. It's only 2 ply as opposed to the regular sewing thread is 3 ply. I have used different brands for quilting. Who ever has the color I want.

Thanks for all your advice! I will check out some of the brands you mentioned and see which ones I like. I really appreciate all the advice. So far, I've used regular sewing threads for what I've done, since that's what I've had.

I'm aurifil all the way...light grey for piecing (50wt), and usually 40wt for quilting (whatever color goes with the quilt). Play & have fun!

I usually use light gray. When I taught, I used the greatest contrast I could so my students could "see" what I was doing. Now I want to be sure nothing shows :)

I use whatever color (as long as it doesn't show thru) I have for piecing because no ever sees it once the quilt is done. Sometimes it will be cotton, and sometimes poly that also doesn't matter to me for piecing. When it comes time to quilt, I like to use connecting threads cotton, but also have been known to use poly. I quilt with whatever color hollers at me and says "Use me, Use me!". And horror of horrors, the top and bottom threads may not match....LOL. I do use older thread after a strength test. I refuse to spend megabucks on thread....I simply cannot justify it.

I use Masterpiece by Superior threads for piecing my quilts. I use beige or lt. gray thread.
