I am making the children eachtheir own little quilt and possibly a pillow case to match.

Problem is, the weather here will be hitting 90-100 degrees soon. Probably won't be much of a need for quilts to stay warm! (Duh). Would it be silly to give them to the children now or should I wait until cooler weather? Don't want to look like I'm just a silly ol' grandma, but would like to help them out.

Guess after all this, my question is.....is there a quilt giving season?

Quilt-giving season is year-round. It is more about the love that went into the making of the quilt than the actual quilt itself. At least that is how I look at it. Most people don't really know how much work goes into the making of one, but they can FEEL the love when they touch it. May sound kinda hokey, but my GKs love when I make them a quilt, no matter how many I make them. Go to it, and enjoy the new family!!!

I completely agree. If it was for just physical comfort you could just give an old army blanket.(well, not too comfy there) but it's the emotional comfort that seems more important at this time. Find out their favorite colors, animals, bugs; make it something solely their own & they'll never forget your kindness.

Nanjun 06-11-2011 04:51 AM

I think it is kind and generous of you to do this for the children. they will love the quilts.
I want to make a quilt and pillow case for some foster children. My dauhgter is a CASA rep for 3 children at this time. It would give these kids something of their own.

kateyb 06-11-2011 05:04 AM

Kids use quilts to lay to watch TV, read, make forts, etc. It gives them comfort all year. Go for it now.

AnnT 06-11-2011 05:06 AM

It's always a good time for quilt-giving, especially to kids who may not have a lot right now. They could probably use something of "their very own".

matraina 06-11-2011 05:08 AM

I think there's a time to use but never a time to give.

lillybeck 06-11-2011 05:16 AM

Quilts are great anytime. It may be to warm to sleep under one but it is never too hot to lay on the floor with one.

atvrider 06-11-2011 05:30 AM

It's been 105/106 and I still sleep with a quilt. I really dislike A/C, so I am happy to have a quilt on top of me to bind.

stichinluvr 06-11-2011 05:40 AM

My DGS has his 4th birthday Friday. He wants another Gramma quilt. And he'll get one. He lives in Central KS and it's been in the 100's there already.

GladGrams 06-11-2011 05:41 AM

This is a wonderful idea. Maybe you could add a little note letting them know that when they need some hugs they can curl up on it or under it and feel your love.

Good luck and go for it!!!

Becky13 06-11-2011 06:12 AM

Sounds like especially what the little kiddos have been through, they would love to have their very own quilt !

arimuse 06-11-2011 06:18 AM

I would give a quilt any time of the year, esp to kids who have little next to nothing - it makes people feel special. Also, since its so hot, what if you made sunhats for them from some of the fabric used in the quilts, that way they can have their quilts "with them", to show others when theyre outside. If you dont sew clothing type things, how about buying hats from a dollar store, like a baseball cap or sometihng the kids wear and making a band/ribbon on them from some of the fabric in the quilt. sharet (I just say that cus I have to wear a hat in the sun or I'll pass out -lol, old people, sheez!)

alapetitechaise 06-11-2011 06:22 AM

I use a lightweight batting and give them for year round gifts. Good luck!

Tinabodina 06-11-2011 06:29 AM

Never to warm to give a quilt!

cowgirlquilter 06-11-2011 06:34 AM

There are certain rules you know...(grinning) It is a very predetermined "giving season" and it is very strictly enforced.

There are ONLY 12 months you are allowed to give, and ONLY on days that end in "y".
The Quilting Diva club will certainly give you more explanation if more is needed.......

can't wait to see what kind of pretty quilts you will be giving those angels....smiling......

laurac 06-11-2011 06:45 AM

good comments from everybody. besides many people use a quilt as a "bedspread", its decoratie and may make them feel really loved.

nnwalton2 06-11-2011 06:45 AM

To me the quilts are not only for sleeping on and playing under but if everyone else in the family has one - then it is an acceptance and welcoming to the family. Sounds like they are lucky to "have" you. Think maybe this is what they need and it is always nice to feel wanted and accepted. I say give now and sit back and enjoy the smiles that you get.

Ramona Byrd 06-11-2011 06:54 AM

I think this will be a marvelous, loving "Welcome to the family" gift that will be loved for many years.

Go on and finish them and gift your love quilts to them. You'll wind up as one of their favorite people.

Ramona Byrd 06-11-2011 06:56 AM

Yes, there IS a quilt giving season. It starts when the quilt is finished and ends when the person gets it to love.

grannypat7925 06-11-2011 07:08 AM

Anytime is a good time to give a quilt!

Creative Chris 06-11-2011 07:24 AM

Sew 'em up as soon as possible and give them to the grandkids. Quilts are a gift of love and you will wrap them up with LOVE.

Lynneander 06-11-2011 07:35 AM

I would give the quilt, regardless of the weather. For me, a quilt is more of a "comfort" thing, however it is used. It seems like the children would love to have something special that was made just for them. Sew away!

Get stitchin, girlfriend!

I agree. Quilts are forever

AngieS 06-11-2011 07:50 AM

I use a quilt year round. I HAVE to have something on me while I sleep. Especially if they are going through a difficult time this would brighten their day. I say absolutely give it to them now. :) You are very sweet to think of them and do this for them. Those kids will love it! ;)

quiltingcousin 06-11-2011 07:51 AM

I'm with so many other posters.....give the quilts now as there are so many uses besides warmth. These loving gifts from you will probably be remembered long after you are gone as gifts of acceptance and love that came from your heart as you welcomed them into your lives and home. I hope these little ones bring you much happiness.

Wunder-Mar 06-11-2011 07:51 AM

I agree - quilt giving is year-round and quilts are for snuggling and comfort as much as cold-weather coverage.

AngieS 06-11-2011 07:53 AM

I should have mentioned too that if they have air conditioning then the kids may be cold because usually adults like it cooler than the kids do. Mine will drag their's off their beds and into the living room when they wake up because they are still cold. It's been in the 90's here lately too. ;) I'd love to see pictures of your quilts when they are completed. :)

MissJMac 06-11-2011 07:58 AM

PLEEEEEZE!!!! Every season is Quilt Season. In the winter, quilts lay on children for warmth and love. In the summer children lay on quilts during naps, playtime, TV time. Some even hang them on the walls as art treasures to be studied.
GIVE THE KIDS A QUILT LOL

caspharm 06-11-2011 09:22 AM

I agree. Quilts are good anytime and kids always need something that's theirs in a stressful situation. Good for you. I hope all works out for everyone.

travelingquilter 06-11-2011 09:42 AM

JUST USE A LIGHT WEIGHTBATTING IN IT.

Dolphyngyrl 06-11-2011 10:14 AM

give them now, I sleep under quilts in the summer and it hits triple digits her in southern california. One thin quilt will not make you that hot especially with fans and AC

Playtime7 06-11-2011 10:14 AM

I live in FL and I still feel the need to throw a quilt or afghan around me at times... Make them one... I am sure they will treasure it. Our grandson (20 months old) loves blankets all the time. :)

iamLaura 06-11-2011 10:31 AM

Nope. Taking my son his quilt this week and he lives in TN. A king size one to boot. Double batting.

glenda5253 06-11-2011 10:40 AM

Any time is quilt-giving time IMHO.

Quilting Angel 06-11-2011 11:08 AM

I would say quilt giving is for any day of the year. I always have one over me when I'm sleeping. I'm sure they will be treasured, so get to quilting. :)

bobquilt3 06-11-2011 11:10 AM

Quilts do soooo much more than just keep you warm. By all means give them a quilt. Let them feel the joy of someone's love and the knowledge that someone cares.

valsma 06-11-2011 11:17 AM

You just be that silly ole grandma and give those babys a quilt anytime. I'm sure their parents and them will appreciate the gift and besides they will need them this winter anyways. At any rate it will be nice to decorate their beds and should they get chilly in the evening they can wrap up in them.

pkelly1947 06-11-2011 11:22 AM

THE quilt may not be used right away, but the child can use it when they want to & it will be their own quilt. Just remember all the snow & cold just a few months ago.
