Card trick. I made one in my first class and it literally drove me to tears. Then about ten years later I found some really great instructions online and made a whole quilt. Now Elmer’s school glue is my best friend for piecing. My main focus was primarily appliqué for several years making my own patterns and samples. Loved the look of a lot of the longarm quilting so figured if they could do it so could I. Mastered FMQ on my Bernina. Stars are not necessarily my friend but may try one someday. If I like a pattern enough I would at least try a block. Over the years my skills have improved some techniques being better than others. Kind of like saying your kid would never then guess what sure enough they do. So don’t limit yourself. Give it a try.

I've never made a very complicated pattern and as I'm really old now, I prefer the simple ones. I'm happy to be able to produce little simple 4-or 9- patch or easy appliqued baby or child's size quilts that are to be used to cuddle under... surely not taken on shows or hung on walls!
I do enjoy seeing what beauties y'all make. What a talented bunch we have here! Keep up the good work and don't let any pattern scare you! At least ,.. Try!! |
I decided that doing curves were not in my thing in the early days of quilting. Then one day a friend said to me, you make clothes and do set in sleeves, quilt curves can't be much different or harder. Turns out she was right, it did take some practice and some not too perfect curves but have it mastered. When doing Stack n whack quilts, I use all the left overs in the border or another quilt. Just take your time and jump in, you might like it. Peace, Brenda

A lot of patterns I would not care to try. Since I mostly give quilts away or donate I just make simple type quilts. Since I don't/won't know if people really want/like them I don't want to spend a lot of time making them.
I just made a king size quilt for a Grandson and his Wife, I will never make another. |
The thing that deters me is if I like something - if I like it I might try a block as a challenge to myself. Sometimes the blocks turn into quilts. I like trying something new to see how it goes.

Baltimore Album quilt. I don't care for the look so would never take the time to make one.

I won't do anything that requires multiple templates and it needs to be forgiving. I also hate wasting fabric, so any stack and whack is out of the question.

A New York Beauty is the first one that came to mind. Very pretty, but not for me.
