put the spool inside a closed ziplock bag with a tiny tip clipped off one corner. pull the thread through the clipped tip. when not in use, either tape the thread end to the bag, or hold it with the ziptop. (snack size bags work best but i couldn't find mine to use in this pic.)
added bonus ... keeps it clean. |
When My son got married, on some of the flowers were in little mesh sleves. I grabed some before the flowers went out and us them on the spools

A tiny piece of tape will make it stay. That is what I do with Christmas ribbon too.

Whether I am traveling or storing thread at home, I use the blue painters tape to hold thread in place. I just tear off a smidgen and stick it on the spool.

Hugo's amazing tape works great for that and many other things. It sticks to itself but not to the thread, and it is reusable, over and over, so you don't have to take tape with you for when it looses it's stick.

I use those cheap pony tail holders. The mini ones are good for bobbins.
