Thinking of getting a Kindle Fire and was wondering why you like it better than others. Thanks. Jackie

Hey I'm on mine right now. I have the Kauffman calculator as well. I love the portability of them. Mine is an iPad one so I can't download PDF files, nor does it have a camera. So folks if your thinking of one get the ipad2.

I love my iPad. I am not a techno at all, however with this gadget I have been able to catch up with the rest of the world. I use it at least 3 times a day. Although still in love with the feel of a book I have kindle on mine so can take as many books with me when I travel, if I am not sleeping can read or check with you all with out putting on the light and disturbing DH. I store my photos on it and can check my emails quickly. I have 3 weather apps on it as I am a farmer and find them useful. DH purchased it for me as my birthday present last year and I still tell him how great it is.

I have the iPad 2 and can view PDFs. I open them in a safari and then touch the screen and it allows you to one in iBooks. This should work with both iPad 1 and 2, you may need to update to the most current software. And I'm not sure if there is a cost to that. Also, there are some apps out there that allows you to view PDFs but I prefer iBooks and I can sync that with my computer using iTunes which I would recommend to do monthly if you down load a lt of PDFs as I do with patterns and ideas.

Thanks for the apps. I am saving up for an iPad. Cannot wait for all its capabilities.

I have a shop locator. It bases off where you are standing (sitting) and then displays on a map quilt stores that are close to you - you can also pull it in list view.

Good Luck!

There is an app out at the app store called quilters app that is pretty pricey but let's you construct a quilt with your own fabrics. There is also a tutorial on you tube about this app. The creator is MarDan GeoSpatial. See what you think.

I think I am missing something here...I have a laptop PC with broadband mobile so I am on-line all the time (except in the Bershires of western MA where there is no telephone service!) with EQ7, all my photos of quilts and shows and ideas and patterns, all jpg's and pdf's, plus all my bookmarks and links to sites like the quilting board. I hook up my camera to the PC and download photos. I scan fabrics to the PC, tweak color in photoshop, and file in EQ7. I watch utube videos and search for patterns, shop for fabrics, and all that. I even tear myself away from it and do quilting. LOL!!!
I think I must be missing something with this ipad/ereader/tablet thing but I don't know what it is. Bringing the device to the LQS?
If I get one will it talk to my PC?
Appreciate your thoughts on this folks....
thanks

If you get one, you would have a program called iTunes that you install on your PC and you can move files back and forth that way.

I have a small iPod touch that I use to read my Quilting Arts pdfs, read this site early in the morning, I play games and read books too. I got mine when I was pregnant because my work bag was too heavy and my husband didn't want me to take my heavy books to work and back and I refused to not be able to read during the time that I'm sitting on transit.

I love how light it is to hold and how I can have over 100 different books and magizines at my fingertips at one time.

bisbetica 01-07-2012 03:06 AM

thanks for the info on Zite. I have had an iPad for a while but didn't know about it. I have used most of the other apps mentioned here and I love my iPad a lot.

I have the first iPad. The newer models are lighter in weight. I use iBook to store my PDFs. It was a free app. I read the quiltboard and facebook. I play games, read email and do ancestry.com. I
watch you tube videos with earbuds while dh watches black and white airplane movies. He thinks I'm watching them with him.

I have a desktop (which will be dismantled and given away), a laptop, an iPad and an iPhone. The difference between an iPad and a laptop is in the ease of carrying them around. I always have my iPad with me so I can read a book while waiting at dr or getting infusion treatments - I can use the Kindle app, the Nook app, the Google app to read books. Or do anything else that I do on my laptop. Twitter, Facebook, newspapers, etc.

In fact I hardly every sue my laptop - that might be going soon too!

Oh and it is easy to prop the iPad up next to my sewing maching or cutting board and following a pattern. No more paper!

I have an iPad 3 and just love it!

DOTTYMO 09-30-2012 11:40 PM

I use my mobile and iPad to store books, patterns and anything to do with quilting. Out and about I am not able to connect with Internet but I take my iPad to classes to follow patterns. I store free patterns on a Peggy thing which I stick in machine. (Sorry learnt to use computer but never was told correct names).
I do have a few apps on my mobile phone. But as I live in a poor reception area it does't work all the time. I do store kindle patchwork books . I have found that if I use my main computer and size the templates I can print off very easily no tracing.

For Android users there's Stitcher's Helper, Floss Checklist and one other that I can't remember the name of. Just check out opeware and see what else you find.

I love my stitcher's helper and floss checklist. The checklist has other threads besides DMC, Anchor. It has Sulky and Gueterman (sp) as well.

Good luck!

I know it is an old post, but my girlfriend (A Quilter) and I (Computing Student) released Quiltography for the iPad yesterday if anyone is still looking or interested.

There is a popular UK blogger who got a first look and is pretty impressed (Even if I do say so myself :D)

We are also open to suggestions to help make it the perfect quilting app.

thequilteddove 05-01-2013 03:41 AM

Plus I save all my patterns to pdf and email them 2 myself so that I may look at them where ever/when ever I want!

willowwind 05-01-2013 03:47 AM

There's also Quilt Wizard, it good.

Go to the app store and get the iBook. You can save PDF files to it. Can also AirPrint for those patterns you want to print. Just make sure your printer can air print with wifi. The iBook app is free. I will be looking at the site app.

Several ppl asked about the iPad & what they are used for.I'm in my 4th yr with it ,using the iPad 4model now. There's not a day goes by that I'm not on line with it.The lap top has been sentenced to the closet.

Just being able to sit in my easy chair with feet up is SO comfy, compared to hunching over a computer. I have the 16 with Wi Fi.The Wi Fi comes bundled with cable TV.Works perfectly,as does the air printer that is in another room.

I can e mail our kids /Grkids about as fast as a phone call.I can watch all the cable tv shows on iPad...including networks etc.Find directions to most anyplace, hit print for a paper copy.Look up many, many recipes ,health info, any hobby info, local & out of state newspapers,Kindle books.Movie & TV listings, vacation info for anyplace in the world. It has beautiful pictures that just a click sends to anyone you want.I have calendar reminders, weather, clocks. Can watch sewing & many many more videos.

Can be done in many public places,on the porch or back deck,at family ....as most have Wi Fi.
Dr's offices,hospitals,colleges.....That is just the tip of the iceberg with what you can do on an iPad.
I think most ppl love theirs. Know I do.

plainpat 05-01-2013 09:46 AM

I forgot that I already have a reader......More apps than a person can keep track of :D

i finally bought myself the newest iPad for Christmas. Love it! It's much easier to travel with than my laptop. Since I only got the wi-fi version, I decided to get the 64 gb one. I like to watch movies while on an airplane, and this is perfect.

While at home, I am usually using all of my electronics simultaneously! I prefer to use my laptop if I have lots of typing to do. Sitting next to me will be the iPad often running a quilt tutorial for me to enjoy. My phone is always close to me as well for texting and playing games.

Not quite sure how I managed to grow up in the 60's and 70's without any of these devices!

Anna,
I made an iPad cushion for a friend for Christmas based on a pattern I saw on a Kindle site that a woman was generous enough to share. I actually made 1 iPad cushion and 9 book rest cushions for my reading friends. Here's how:

Cut out 2 pieces of fabric each 12 x 14" (for the book cushions cut the fabric 20 x 24"). Right sides together, sew around all 4 sides leaving an opening to turn. Square off 3 of the 4 corners - like you do when you make a purse with a flat bottom, meet the front and back seams of the corner and sew straight across about 2" down. (For the big bags I sewed about 8" down.) Turn the bag inside out and fill about 2/3 full with the styrofoam beads that you use to fill bean bag chairs. I bought an immense bag of beans for about $13 and ended up using all of them because I made so many cushions. Hand sew the opening shut. When you put the cushion on your lap the point that you did not square off is on top. Smoosh the cushion around till you find a comfortable angle to hold your book or iPad.

You can fancy these up by making a fabric or ribbon loop to put in the corner that is not squared off so that when you turn it right side out there's a loop handle and I also put a pocket on the big ones to keep a pencil, reading glasses or a nice big bar of chocolate that you can munch on while reading.

I hope these directions are clear, it's hard to describe how to do something in words. Really, it took about 15 minutes to make the iPad cushion and once I started an assembly line for the others I had them done in an afternoon. I'll post a picture if I can manage to figure out how.

Char

Thanks for that tute.I would like to try making yr pattern.

Karen, I was lucky to recently get an iPad too. You may want to get a QuiltMate Pro for it, I love mine!!!

I watch lots of tutorials!
