I like the carpenter star too. Jennie Doan has a youtube tutorial on a big star quilt. One big star would make a nice wall quilt. I think it turns out about 20 inches or so and looks very quick and easy.

I have a Pine Needles rectangle wall hanging above my gas fireplace. Do you enjoy appliqué or piecing the best?

The Labyrinth would be really nice. I made one for my Queen bed. It is really a pretty easy quilt to make.

I would select a few patterns and get your daughter's imput on the right one.

There are so many free wall hanging and table topper patterns on line that could be used. I would select several and go from there.

I'm working on Jinny Beyer's Crystal Star large size but they have the 25" pattern too. I saw it at a friend's house over her mantel and I just had to have one too though I don't have a mantel and have never tried paper piecing before. I'm at the point of putting the sections together to finish and it wasn't as difficult as I'd thought it would be. The pattern comes with both sizes and directions if you want to use your own color scheme instead of their 150 colors as on the front of the pattern.

I'm also a fairly new quilter and if it is easy for me, anyone can do it.

We started with 2 20" by 28" paintings, which wasn't large enough. I was originally thinking macrame (knotted yarns) for mine. Then we saw a 5x7' rug that fits perfectly. It's kind of an Indian Rug design. If I were choosing today, I would probably choose the design that looks like hanging square in a squares.

For your daughter, it depends on what her tastes are. Based on our experience, try hanging just a piece of fabric there to be sure that 28" square would be large enough. Then probably a single block done in colors that would complement her decor. I like all of the suggestions so far -- bargello, carpenter's wheel, Labyrinth, Crystal Star,

I made a miniature diamond log cabin that hangs above my fireplace at times. It gets lots of compliments.

McKenna Ryan's Pine Needles Wildflower patterns make a stunning quilt. I made 2 of them for friends and they have received many complements on them. You can customize the backgrounds and borders to blend with her decor. These patterns are fusible web applique and are somewhat time consuming, but well worth the effort.
