This is a dense fabric, but my daughter wanted a deep red quilt. I was considering doing an OBW with this fabric. I have 6 yds of it and the repeat is 12". Would the hexes look too much alike? I will use the fabric for her quilt, but I could use another pattern. If I use this, the OBW would just be the center of the quilt.

I am definitely no expert but I don't think there is enough variation.

I think the pattern is to dense. All of your hexes will look alike.

too dense. Need more contrast

Thanks, I'll use another pattern for this fabric. I do have some fabric that would work, just not the right color for her.

Do you have 2 mirrors ? You could hold them by the edges against the fabric and see what the hexes would look like, just another way to check

I like the fabric. It is dense and similar colors. If done it would be very subtle color change for sure. Not as bold as some others i have seen for sure.
I personally think it would work. Whether it would turn out to your liking is difficult to say. But if you try and don't lime how they look together. You can try a variation. Either put different triangles in making it more a stack n wack. Or there is one that you put a strip of fabric on the outside and it turns into a type of star. |
I think it would work if you are very selective about where you make your cuts. Feature a non red color in several. There's some orange and some white easily visible.

It would work but as others have said it would be more subtle. You could always add some hollow cubes or even some applique to spritz it up a bit - I did applique over my monochrome 'Orchidacious' so the OBW was nearly only the 'background' http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-92716-1.htm Just an idea...

I'm a relative newbie to this site. I am having trouble with all the acronyms. What is an OBW?
Thanks! |
