beautiful quilt, I must try the half square triangle thing, looks like a quick way to do those.
I need to get one of those rulers, make it so much easier for squaring up or cutting stuff... yard stick just doesn't work well |
How about a morning star quilt?

So many great ideas posted!
To avoid recutting, you could stitch the squares, just as they are, into long strips, then join the strips with narrow sashing, either length wise or side-to-side. A border, then pieced strips all around and a final border. The same method could be used to make two quilts by varying the colors of the sashing and/or having the strips run horizontally or vertically. No trimming needed. |
I luuuuv the half square triangles! You guys are so clever and talented. And oh yes, also so inspiring!

How about a bow tie-easy method?

I want to make a quilt out of them for each of her daughters, but have no idea in which direction I should go other than start sewing them in rows and go with it....I believe that I will have to trim them down to 4" squares to square them up and even them.
Any ideas for patterns that use 4" squares? Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have :) Billy |

I had tons of 4" squares my mom in law left me (well bil tossed em, and I took em).
I made a crown of thorns, or mariner's star...whatever they call it...has many names. I took white muslin, cut into 4" squares... then I sewed two squares together (one color/1 white)...right sides together..marked a diagonal line...sewed a scant 1/4" on each side of the line...cut in two on the diagonal line...tons of half square triangles. I made the star, then a trip around the world, a pinwheel quilt...I just started laying out the squares until I found a design I liked...made tons of different patterns. Some of squares not made into half sqs, I made into 9 patch quilts for grandsons...again adding a solid color to alternate with the colored squares. carpenter's star |
I believe it is calle crazy 9 patch by Eleanor Burns. make 9 patch squares then cut them into 4 mix them up and sew them back together. I have done this with multiple Christmas fabrics and the effect is different for each one so the quilts would be individualized. Good luck!!!!
