Rose I think that is "do the Hokey Pokey " and turn yourself around, but I like your definition better. Quilting Grannie I'm glad you found out from Google that this is a 'Hoochy Corner, I guess this is the 'Corner' where quilters display their 'beautiful wares' quilts that is lol. I love it this is a riot. Sorry Sue we aren't making fun of you but I don't think anyone really knows what it means, or at least I don't. Websters, just refers to it as booze. By the way I don't drink, and I don't think anyone else has tonight, but I love this. Maybe I should start a new quilt with mismatched points, corners etc. and name it a 'Hoochy Corner" this just might the a good seller, or might make up a pattern or book and sell it. Just a thought. If anyone else comes up with this I want copy rights and royalties from the sales. Maybe that's what a 'Crazy Quilt really is a Hoochy Corner Quilt. Just a crazy thought. This is a riot I needed this laugh today and just before betime too, I'll bet some of us will be dreaming of 'Hoochy Corners' tonight, hope no one talks in their sleep, DH's will think we are really crazy.

The replies to my question are hilarious!!! The term hoochy corner is in the new QUILT magazine and refers to the quilt on the front cover.
LOVE THIS WEBSITE.............. Sue38 |
There's a Hoocy Mama Quilts book by Mary Lou Weidman. Maybe if someone is interested in learning more.

She also has a blog site. marylouweidman.blogspot.com

I had to agree with JoAnn! I figured it was where our husbands were while we were quilting!! lol
|
I was thinking abut signing up for the funky neighborhood block exchange. Maybe I could do a hoochie corner.
|
this is just so funny, I think I heard my dad say that a couple times when I was younger, he used the term for when he was in the navy and he was talking about all the lose ladies that would wait for the ships to come in. Penny

Now I have a new term to use Hoochie....When I have to fit in a sea, I can call it a hoochie seam now.lol
|
Maybe hoochy corners are like cattywompus or askew or not laying flat.
|
Oh...I think they are very much cattywompus!
|
cattywompus??!! My mother always said scatty wompus! Regional variations.

I just found the cutest pattern on allpeoplequilt.com for a "Spring Flowers Wall Hanging" that was inspired by Mary Lou Weidman's design "It's a Riot" and it features hoochy corners. The pattern directions explain how to use this technique. Check it out here:

My guess on hoochey corners is when they are not squared. as in binding not mitered accurately or binding not mitred accurately.
|
i ment to say borders not mitred accurately or if not mitred then squared up
|
I checked the site out and now I know what 'hoochy corners' are. Not what I thought prior to checking the site.

I just had to explain that to my husband the other day. There is a difference between cattywompus and kitty corner but not katty corner and kitty corner.

Must admit I had never heard of this expression before with regard quilting. Gal |
That's what I thought of when I read this.

Hoochy momma is a pattern book by Mary Lou Weidman. It is supposed to be a fun, easy way to make blocks, I have never tried it. Check out Mary Lou Weidman or Hoochy Momma quilts. I know this is an old post but you may still be curious.

LOL
Gotta LOVE this reply. |
where did you hear the term?

LOL, hoochy corner! Since the lines don't match maybe is should be called scootchy corner!! Better than mixing it up with the "ladies of the evening". Even those girls want their seams to match.
I live near Scotch Corner (UK) - I know it has nothing to do with the thread, but I thought I would "mess things up a little" Perhaps we should be known as Scootch Corner... |
Come on ladies....A hoochy corner is one that you had to "make" fit by hooching it...push, pull, hooch to make it fit. After all that a good press also helps. :0)
