I personally love muslin. It is so soft, easy to work with both in hand and machine quilting and it gives it the "vintage look" that I like. I have also used the 108" fabric and it it wonderful. No piecing on the back. Just use what you want....get creative....it all works. :)

I use Wal Mart fabric for my backing. It just costs to much for expensive fabric for backing.

I also use walmart's muslin for backing.........it is less than 5 bucks a yard and is 90 inches wide.........100% cotton and permanent press. It is so soft after it is washed. It is great for tied as well as hand or machine quilting.

Muslin, quilting fabric, or quilt back fabric.
Usually the muslin (it's cheaper), unless the quilt "tells" me it needs something else. :) |
I usually go to the fabric store and buy the quilt backing that is 108" wide. If I can't find what I want I will use 100% cotton, but I really like the quilt backing.

I always use the quilt quality fabric- pieced or backing width. My grandmother was a professional seamstress and she told me if I was going to put all this time and work into a project, use the best I could afford. Otherwise, why bother. So, I do fewer projects, use the best stuff, and handquilt almost everything. I also use cotton batting. The polyester beards too much.
Use what will make your project turn out the way you want it. Cheryl |
