I went to a week-long quilt camp with Marsha McCloskey. She teaches feathered stars, but included so much more about drafting, etc. that has been really helpful on other projects. I liked her teaching so much that I took another two-day class from her eight months later.

Did a two-day paper-pieced feathered star class from Paula Golden at our local quilt show last year. It was a little too advanced for my skill level at the time.

Attended a two-hour color class from Jinny Beyer.

Finally, a six-week long Illusions class through Quilt University taught by Karen Combs. That was a really good way for me to learn since one concept was introduced each week for four weeks.

I've signed up for a free-motion quilting bootcamp in October with Harriet Hargrave.

I agree. I took one log cabin, quilt in a day and it was a zoo. No time to relax as the teacher was trying to get all 15 quilts in the class finished that day. I do much better on my own. Since I'm left handed, I have had to teach myself most any handwork I tried. I read patterns well and have the patience to take my time. Don't put myself on a time schedule anymore like for birthdays or Christmas. They get 'em when they're finished.

Took a Karen Kay Buckley Applique class. It was awesome.

In the years I've been quilting I've taken uncountable numbers of classes and workshops. Some (just a few) were taken with now well known teachers. Nancy Mahoney is one, she lives close by. Another would be Jane Hardy Miller, another Floridian, she taught her "French Braid" style, of course. I also took workshops with Ricky Timms and Alex Andersen. Most of the rest have been with local teachers who are very good. I've learned a lot from them, but find I do better once I'm all alone at home and can work at my own speed. 8-)

Debbr63 08-21-2011 06:13 AM

Have taken intro to machine quilting, bindings, a small box pattern and Carpenter Star. All were great and I had a good time! Different quilt shops and instructors. Almost forgot too a OBW too. Deb

Yes, I took a paper piecing class and fell in love with paper piecing. The class was at Country Fabrics in Shiloh, Ohio.

My very first class three years ago was Lucky Stars followed by a twister class, two purse pattern classes, a class for binding, little woolies class, transfering photos to fabric, and famous teacher - two classes from Darlene Zimmerman one wedding ring and the other hummingbird pattern - Darlene is an awesome teacher and has great trunk shows.

muskratwine 08-21-2011 07:23 AM

I'm lucky enough to belong to a very active guild & we've had a lot of great teachers - Billie Lauder, Paula Nadelstern, Marci Baker, Judy Niemeyer, Carol Doak, Sally Collins, Becky Goldsmith, Sharon Schamber - lots more I can't think of. It's great to get these "famous" teachers as well as having some pretty awesome members in our own guild. You can always learn something new from every teacher & it's always fun!! Yesterday one of our members taught a class at a local restaurant - food was great too!!

Went to a quilt fest in Tenn. this past March. Took a hand quilting class from Cindy Blackberg and a class from Bonnie Hunter. Bonnie is a wonderful instructor and would reccommend her to anyone from beginning to advance.

QuiltnLady1 08-21-2011 07:48 AM

I spent a lot of time doing free quilt Saturdays where you work on what you want with a teacher to help. I have done a couple of BOM samplers where you actually take a class about how to do the blocks and I learned a lot of techniques doing that. I have also done classes with Freddy Moran, a couple of fmq classes, Reynola Pakusich's Overlapping Circle Play, Mary Lou Weidman shadow play. A Christmas tree skirt with wedges, a nickle quilt and others I can't remember. I always look to learn a new technique when I take a class.

Anyway, she's from Penn. and she taught hand applique that's done with heat resistant mylar templates and sizing. Thank you Retired Quilter, you named her. I guess it was her first and middle names that started with the same letter.

Does this include the things I learned at my mothers knee in a farm house with a dozen aunts and neighbor women all talking at the same tine.

Even though I live "way up north", we have a very active quilt guild and I have been lucky enough to take classes from: Nancy Bergman, Bonnie Hunter, Pam Holland, Kim Cooke, Annie Smith, Marilyn Weibe, Anna Hergert, Brenda Henning. And those are the ones I remember. I enjoy taking workshops, even though quilt patterns are very detailed, each 'teacher' has her own tips and tricks.

meanmom 08-21-2011 08:29 AM

I don't take a lot of classes. I am mostly self taught. I am taking a class in a few weeks from Jennie Rayment. I can't wait. I am thinking about doing a BOM for a Baltimore Album. I figure it is the only way I will keep myself on track with it. I have always wanted to make one.

maryb44662 08-21-2011 08:36 AM

I have never taken a class on sewing, quilting, knitting or crocheting. I bought "Learn How" books and "Quilting 101". I am a self teacher. The board and other sites have helped me a great deal with their tips, etc. The tv shows have helped too. Once you learn to read the instructions, it is not that hard to make something. I love my hobbies. Take care, Mary

Donna Hall 08-21-2011 08:39 AM

I have taken many classes at the LQS, Texas Our Texas quilt, others that I can't remember. I have also taken classes at quilt shows (handpiecing, EQ6, applique). Also taken classes on cruises. I starting a class in September in McKiney, TX on Women of the Bible quilt. I also have taught classes at the LQS.

Linda K. 08-21-2011 08:39 AM

I have taken classes from Mariann Fons and Harriet Hargraves both were fun. My LQS has a lot of classes. The teachers are very good. My favorite is the lady that does my LAQ.

linhawk 08-21-2011 08:59 AM

I took one on machine quilting.

Just need to practice.... practice and more practice.

I am working on a lap quilt that will be one of my practice pieces.

grannypat7925 08-21-2011 09:53 AM

Took a beginner class in Florida and made Yellow Brick Road. Took FMQ class last year. The rest I have done on my own.

I have attended Empty Spools seminars in Asilomar in Pacific Grove five years and taken from Alex Anderson, Margaret Mitchell, Vivian Johnson and several other well known quilters. Pacific Grove, right next to Carmel is a lovely vacation area with great scenery and great meals as well. It runs for 5 days each session but has become rather pricey , so I would call it a vacation with quilts. But absolutely inspirational.

MarilynLouise 08-21-2011 10:13 AM

If I would have taken more classes I wouldn't have had to learn so much by doing it WRONG!

One of my wishes is to have a class with Bonnie Hunter. The other wish would be to have a class with Gwen Marston. I think I'd toss Freddy Moran into the mix with Gwen. They're both great! 8-)

Grandma Mary 08-21-2011 11:09 AM

I just got into quilting in January, and have taken several classes. Because I am waiting for my old Singer to be repaired, my very first project isn't finished yet. But, I keep taking classes. I love to try things out...always have...and quilting isn't any different.
Beginning Quilting (eight classes over a 4 month period) This class was super! piecing, sampler blocks, 9 square blocks, rail blocks, setting triangles, bias making, paper piecing, flying geese, sandwich making, binding, appliques and stitch in the ditch quilting.
Free Motion Quilting
Hand Quilting
Double Wedding Ring wallhanging
Beginning Landscape quilting
Clothesline rope bowl
I will be taking a cute fall applique table runner class next month.
What fun! :D

Eileen 08-21-2011 11:53 AM

I haven't taken any classes from famous teachers. But I have taken a beginners class & then a twisted star class, but the most fun I have had was doing a monthly strip poker class.

nannyrick 08-21-2011 12:35 PM

I took online classes from Jenny Doan from Missouri Star
Quilt Co.
Since I am a beginner, I found them easy to follow and
instruction that I could understand.
They are great to refer to when you want to go back to
something that you can't rememberand need a refresher
course.

CAS49OR 08-21-2011 12:44 PM

I took the class for the Mariner's Compass that is my Avatar. I took a beginning quilter class from the same LQS. I found with both that classes are meant as an introduction, and then you bring it home and have to figure it out.

I think a good starter class would cover beginning to end, with extra sessions (at extra cost) offered if necessary.

gardnergal970 08-21-2011 03:26 PM

I took a Marti Michell 2 day workshop in August, attended a lecture by Joe Cunningham...Joe the Quilter...this past week. I'm a member of the Marti and Me Club and will enjoy all of the tips she passes on to us. I've just completed a BOM with our LQS instructor and will be taking her next BOM. My husband thinks I shouldn't have to take classes, that pictures in books should be enough, but nothing takes the place of sewing and learning with other!

LindaMRB 08-21-2011 03:26 PM

I'm a do it your selfer... like to figure it out myself.
Also find that I just can't schedule it in with work and kids...
I've always done it that way with everything.
I really pushed to learn some computer software and nearly beat the program into submission...
This does not always work but I do like the challenge.

So I've never taken a sewing class except Home Ec in high school way back.

A few years ago, Eleanor Burns had a class in Overland Park, KS on her Victory quilt. I was one of a few that was asked to assist in this class. This woman is a ball of energy all the time. Bought her book, had her sign it and got a picture of this. It was an amazing experience.

So sorry for your bad experience at your LQS not all are that way most are nice. You can find companionship from the classes. Check for other ones or a guild.
