After years of looking at and buying several different quilt magazines, I decided that since I don't really like to do patterns, and I love FMQ, I would try Machine Quilting Unlimited. I can only say what a wonderful publication it is - beautiful things, and the magazine is aimed at both long arm quilters and home sewing machine quilters, and is just beautiful. As much as it features lovely professional items, it also has things that a beginner at FMQ, like myself, can really learn something from. Another one, and it's free, is the Online Quilt Magazine.com from Australia. PDF for download, or read on the site - recently Leah Day has been writing for this publication. I am going to keep subscribing to Machine Quilting Unlimited for sure! I also like the AQS American Quilter, although I haven't joined AQS yet. It's worth it to get the magazine! Can't afford 'em all! :)

McCalls is my favorite
|
Better Homes and Gardens American Patchwork, and McCalls quilting. I have tried most of the rest and like fons and porter and quilters newsletters least of all.:)
|
I am not sure what quilting magazines to suggest but as far as how books I love Better Homes and Gardens Complete Guild to Quilting. I still refer to it all the time. I got several how to quilt books when I first started and found that this was the best. I have gotten rid off all of them but this one. Happy Quilting.

I Get most of them and love them all but my favorite are the Quick Quilts. The instructions are easy to follow and you can always me the small projects larger. I didn't subscribe to any of them right away, I tried each one for a couple of months and finally settled on one but now I get most of them. I love getting them in the mail and relaxing and looking at them.

I'm a relatively new quilter too; only 3 years. As a brand new quilter, I really liked Quick Quilts because they were patterns I could do with comfort and confidence. As I've progressed a little, I love American Patchwork and Quilting and McCall's. I would do exactly what someone else recommended. Go to Walmart and look through the magazines for a month or two. Buy a couple that you think you'd like and read them thoroughly. Then decide what you like best. My mother in law has a quilting friend who kept suggesting things for me which my MIL subscribed to for me. However, they weren't my taste in quilting; although quite good magazines, not for me. So, it's really what you think you'd enjoy making rather than what we think you'd like. Do you enjoy applique, piecing, traditional designs or modern fabrics and designs? Each magazine has their own specialty. I like to read about quilt shops in places that I may get to visit. I love traditional designs without 5,000 pieces to keep up with! Love the looks of Civil War, Florals, Batiks, etc. Not every magazine will suit what I am looking for. Have fun, it's sure a great hobby!!!

I subscribe to the following:
Fons and Porter Love of Quilting Fons and Porter Easy Quilts Quilters Newsletter Asian Fabrics American Quilter and then pick up ones at the store as they catch my eye. |
I'm a bit of a magazineholic so I get four currently. I love Quilter's Newsletter cause it's so informative and great stories PLUS so "out there" quilts pictured. Not so many patterns or at least that I'm interested in making.
Fons & Porters I just started getting--verdict still out, seems many of their patterns are for small projects. Quilt is also a new one for me--again verdict still out. Have found some patterns I like and also tips I can use in my guild newsletter. BHG American Patchwork is the one I've taken the longest and always find a pattern or two that I must keep. Instructions seem to be fairly straight forward too. Quilter's World is one that my daughter got for me--I find some awesome patterns in it and good tidbits, but not frequently enough for me to continue it. If I had the $$ I would subscribe to Irish Quilting--very interesting patterns with at least one pattern including some typical Irish knot design, etc. But it's just an occasionaly pick up at Hancocks. for now. I agree with the other post about buying off the rack for a while and getting a feel for whcih one(s) you like best. Also, check out the local library for design books. And often at guild shows they will have stacks of old magazines they are selling--that's how I started to find out about the different magazines out there on quilting. |

I love magazines of all kinds so you can guess that I take lots of quilting magazines. For a beginner, I think Quiltmaker is a good choice. I have all of my back issues. One of my all time favorites is Quilter's World. It offers quilts of all levels and often it features quilts from various quilt shops that you can order all the materials for the featured quilt. But my all time favorite is Australia's Patchwork and Quilting. It is expensive but worth it especially after you have been quilting a while. It seem the Aussies like medaleon and applique which are two of my favorite types of quilting. SM in Georgia

Go to the nearest Barnes & Noble or other bookstore, get a cup of coffee, and look through all their quilting magazines. Then you can buy the 1, 2 or 3 that most appeal to you. You might want to do this several months in a row to see if they are consistently the magazines you like. Have fun!

Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting and Fons and Porter's Easy Quilts are my favorites, but I have to admit, I never met a quilt magazine I didn't like. LOL
|
I was just thinking about this last night... in the reverse. My new Quilter's Newsletter Magazine came & after flipping thru it, I wondered why I still take it (I 'm into traditional quilts). My faves are Fons & Porter (& all the various spin off sfrom it) & also Quick Quilts. I used to like Quilt. I wonder if it's still even around?

I'm FAR from being "good" at quilting, just learning things actually. I like 100 Quilt Blocks and McCall's Quick Quilts.
100 Quilt Blocks: I love the variety of blocks and the diffrent tenchiques. I also like that they have the applique` and other "patterns" right in the magazine. What I "don't like" is they give you fabric measurments to make ONE block, so it takes some figuring to get the amount for a bed quilt size. McCall's Quick Quilts: I love that they give fabric measurments for a full quilt, not just a block. Also like the directions, easy to follow. I haven't gotten an issue yet that I haven't used at least one pattern from. Applique` patterns are in the magazine. Not sure of a downside yet. |
Australian Patchwork and Quilting is wonderful!! Probably costs more here, but I just purchased one or two mags., not a subscription. I love Fons and Porter Quilting mags. and Quilter's Newsletter, but have also purchased Quilter's World and some of the others mentioned. And I keep all of my Quilting Mags.! Just cannot throw them away or give them away. I will eventually have to give some away though. I would hate for my husband to have to deal with all of them when I am gone!

you have wonderful magazines in America, but for us to buy one we would pay anything from $17.95 to $20.95
In Australia and New Zealand we have Australian patchwork and quilting, which is a great magazine with great patterns |
I currently subscribe to American Patchwork and Quilting, Machine Quilting Unlimited and receive American Quilter with my membership to AQS. I occasionally buy Quilting Arts. I usually thumb through the rest and pick 1 a month. I enjoy Fons and Porters Easy Quilts as well as Quilts and More, but a colorful cover can win me over!
|
My favorite is QuiltMania but because it's from France, I only get it at JoAnns. My second best is Quilting Arts. Both these provide a wide range of styles and different techniques. I encourage you to check out your local library to see what they've got and look at back issues before spending lots of $$ on subs.

I used to take all the quilt magazines I could get my hands on. Now they are filled with advertising and pushing particular fabric lines and the quilts seem to all sort of "mush" together, not much real design. I find a lot of good patterns on the internet and then change them to suit my taste and sometimes just make up my own. I also have a good library of quilting books from many years back and they are full of good patterns. The magazines now are so expensive that I decided to drop them all and really haven't missed them.
|
I get a lot of quilting magazines at my local library. You can check some out, then decide what your favorites are.
|
I currently only subscribe to one magazine and that is Primitive Quilts and Projects. I have gotten magazines for so many years, and let all my other magazines lapse. I love the variety of projects that are in PQandP...everything doesn't look the same, and everything is not really primitive. Even friends I have that like more modern quilts like this magazine.
|
My Favorite is Quick Quilts. I also get Fons & Porter, Quilters world and I usually pick up American Patchwork. I also like Easy quilts by Fons & Porter. I have a large collection of the old Miniature Quilts and use them alot.

I have lots of magazines and will send them to you for the price of shipping. I can fill a large box with books and magazines if you want. I find that many of the magazines are the same month after month. Check out Craftsy.com, they have some free classes too.

There is an Australian one that I adore. Sorry I cannot remember the name. It has an American counterpart that is also great. The problem with the Australian one is that it is so expensive. Last time I purchased one it was almost $13. That was a couple of years ago.

I love Quilters Newsletter and Quilt World the most.
