I also think it is a cathredral window block. The first picture is how it goes with all of the points to the center. You then whip stitch the backs together of at least four of them and place a solid piece of fabric in the center, pull the edeges over it and hand stitch in place. It creates a circlular diamond of the fabric you put in there and has four dasiy shape petals around the outside. They didn't need to be quilted afterwords because of all of the layers of folds.

Looks a lot like the base square for cathedral window block, although I would not have used a print fabric. Maybe that's why it was in the trash.

Me too.

to open?? One of tthose mini-holder thingy that you can use as a tree decoration. They usually have some sort of stiffening and are a pouch like that you squeeze open

It is the pattern piece of the catheral window block-my mom made a whole quilt with that pattern for my wedding gift from my folks 30 years ago. it its beautiful i wouldn't trade it for anything and plan to hand it down to my son or daughter when either one of them gets married.

It seems to me that there are little pocket at all the corners. One time a received something like that and it was a bread roll holder for the table. I could fit 8 small rolls in it.
