i'm with those of us that have duplicates. i'm lucky enough to have a bunch of "extras" in the house. there's a seam ripper in nearly every room, three sewing boxes scattered in the house (one used to be the "camping" box), etc. we have two levels, so there are sewing machines in three places--basement, main floor, upstairs. the arthritis doesn't like stairs so much, so it makes sense to have "stuff" in every spot. i've gotten a lot of it at estate/garage sales--and when it comes to the estate sales, i always have to stop and wonder at the life of the person, the things those notions have helped make, and mourn a little that there was nobody in the family to take these things and keep them working. (or maybe rejoice that the tradition was passed on, and they don't need these things--they already have them!) my favorite thimble is an ancient brass one i got at a thrift store, in a bag of miscellaneous junk. it is dented a little, and pretty darned old, but it fits me as though it was made for me. it found its "home", again. good stuff.

Well, you are organized. I have more than one set just for my sewing room. Must have 8 seam rippers because when I need one, I couldn't find one.

If you go to a lot of away from home sewing things, it totally makes sense. I rarely do any longer, sadly.

I have to admit that I have the same thing. I am not a well organized person.

gypsylady5 02-07-2012 08:38 AM

I also have more than two sets depending on what I am going to do or where I'm going. I sure saves time when you want to take a kit to a quilt meeting or to a sit and sew event away from home. And then I have the set that I use at the sewing and cutting table. Can never have too many notions!

brushandthimble 02-07-2012 08:47 AM

I have at least 2 sets, one in the studio across the hall, one for the livingroom and another set in my locker at the studio where I work.
Can't ever have to many LOL. Then if I can't find something I may have to purchase it again. Currently MIA is my 6 inch revolving mat.

I have 3 sets of notions, including sewing machines as I travel alot between our vacation home, motor home, retreats. The one item I forget a lot is my seam ripper, so now I have multiple rippers. Have 2 Godchildren who watch out for me they get all the extra things I need a lot of and loose often. We have extra measuring tapes, seam rippers, seam gauges
.

Ditto. I admit though that some duplicates were purchased just because I couldn't find the original.

sguillot 02-07-2012 10:05 AM

I have done just what you did. I haven't been taking alot of classes lately but I do keep a travel bag just in case, problem is, I can never remember what all is in the bag or even where the bag is sometimes. Sounds like a lot of senior moments to me.LOL

KyKaren1949 02-07-2012 11:20 AM

I have two sets. I did the same thing. I'd go to a workshop and be missing something. I also bought a Busy Box from The Container Store to haul my stuff in when I go to a long term retreat. They're so durable and firm; nothing flimsy about them.

needles3thread 02-07-2012 11:26 AM

jcrow, I like your idea. While reading all these messages, I was thinking about so many people who would
like to be able to afford -one set-. ........ as well as beginning quilters. list any unwanted notions on this board!

glenda5253 02-07-2012 12:12 PM

I'm guilty of having multiple sets of notions but not so much for classes but for different areas of the home and when I can't find the one I just had in my hand (which is often, I'm sorry to say).

seamstome 02-07-2012 12:21 PM

I thought I was the only one that has two of almost everything!!!

babyboomerquilter 02-07-2012 01:00 PM

I have duplicates and then some. I misplace everything in my sewing room, so having more than one of everything is a must!

I've had absurd notions, frightening notions, slightly insane notions, preconceived notions, inspired notions and gol' durned notions. That makes at least six.Sometimes I just take a notion.:D

annpryor 02-07-2012 04:09 PM

I also have more than two sets of some things. Crazy isn't it?

quilt2b 02-07-2012 04:49 PM

Me, too. I have a machine that I keep in my car for classes, retreats and sew dates. With it is a bag of necessary notions including rulers, cutting mats and multi-pack of threads. I only have to gather project specific items. I am ready to sew at all times!

zkosh 02-07-2012 05:04 PM

Okay, now you've got me thinking. I'm going to work on getting a travel bag ready. I know it would make things easier and add to the fun of sewing with my friends. Sometimes it seems like so much work to get everything together that I wonder why we do it. Then we get together and it is so much fun. There have been times in my life when I always had something with me to work on, but I got out of the habit when I went back to work. I need it just as much now! Thanks for the suggestion!

loreen 02-07-2012 06:10 PM

I'm with you. I seem to put things down & then can't find them. I have mor than one of anything.

purplefiend 02-07-2012 06:42 PM

I have 2 sets of things(cutter,rulers...etc), one stays at home; the other stays packed in my Tutto bag for taking to sewing group. If I don't have things pre-packed, something gets left at home and of course I need it. I also have multiple, seam rippers, pin magnets and scissors; one goes in each of my treadle cabinet drawers.

Interesting read. I thought that I was the only one who had multiples of notions. I am trying to curtail the purchase of more, but it is hard when one sees a new ruler or gadget.

Geri B 02-08-2012 07:28 AM

never have enough rippers...they seem to grow feet and walk away.......I wait for JoAnns to have 50%notion sale then I usually pick up "extras" of small stuff......not dups on rulers though...that can get quite pricey........
I wish though, that someone would make a hand needle threader a bit stronger and longer lasting than those silly little silver things with the thin wire that is offered.......I go through those like crazy when I am doing handwork..........any suggestions would be appreciated.......

probles 02-08-2012 11:44 AM

I have multiple sets of notions. I need things at my cutting table, at my sewing table, at my planning table, near the couch when I am working on hand projects. I used to have a set that I used for everything. Then after looking for them multiple times, I went out and purchased more as money would permit. Now I am well stocked and seldom lose anything. Love it.

I have at least two sets of most notions. I leave one set in my bag that I take to classes, retreats and sew-ins. Before I got the extra notions, I was always forgetting something important (everything is important!). Now I don't have to worry about forgetting something.

Thanks for the chuckle! I needed that!

Mary Britton 02-09-2012 04:01 PM

I have two houses, two sewing rooms, two sewing machines and duplicates of almost everything. Dozens of scissors, seam rippers, rotary cutters and rulers.

oldbalt99 02-09-2012 08:37 PM

Now that I spend eight hours with my mother at my sister's apartment, I have a second set to make the blocks for quilts. That includes a sewing machine.

BETTY62 02-09-2012 09:03 PM

I think I have 2 or more of most small sewing notions because I misplace so many things and don't want to waste a lot of quilting time looking for them. I usually find everything and put it back in place when I finish a project and pick up my sewing area.

beaqltr 02-09-2012 09:04 PM

I have two or more of some rulers, rotary cutters, scissors, etc. I hand embroider and applique so I have a little travel kit with some duplicates and unique items. I use the travel kit at home too.

AnnieH 02-10-2012 01:16 AM

Guilty as charged.

CindyBee 02-10-2012 01:26 AM

I have 2 sets. One for home and one packed and ready for travel. It seems I was always forgetting something crucial at home. Problem solved!

zennia 02-10-2012 02:10 AM

Me--one stays packed for outings. In my sewing room I have several of everything. I just bought a new ruler because the numbers were wearing off on the old one but i keep the old one for a back up. Silly i know.

RDM 02-10-2012 08:22 AM

Great idea. I've come home from a class minus something thus my project was on temporary hold, your idea would keep this from happening. I have 2 sets of some notions only because I forget what I previously bought.

skrucker 02-10-2012 11:02 AM

I have two sets only because half my quilting stuff is here in my apartment and half is across town in a storage unit and I can't find anything when I need it so I end up going and buying what I already know I have somewhere. I'm not the best at being organized and I'm really paying for it, not just with money but also fustration!
