Like alot of people have said, you need to do what works for you. I remember a long time ago after I got married, my mother was over at my apartment. As I was cleaning the sink, she said "That's not the way to do that". All I said was that it may not be the way she did it, but it was the way I did it and the results were what I wanted, A Clean Sink. Brenda

Once a 4-H'er, always a 4-H'er ... the blood runs mighty green and thick!! :)

I know it's crazy - but I also pre-wash my batting. I don't like the wrinkled look, so I pre-wash everything. I like it to look newer as long as possible.

Don't know how that posted twice - sorry

I never pre-wash and have never had a problem with major shrinkage or colour bleeds - I think alot of it depends on the quality of the cotton

American or Canadian 4-H?

American. we are both leaders in a "general" club, with members from cloverbuds(age 4) on up. all of our kids were in thru high school. DH is also a shooting sports instructor. We are camp "mom" and "dad" at our county's camp every year.
My grandma was a 4H leader back in the 20s and 30s. my dad was in 4H. so were my siblings and their children.

I am an old woman who does not have the time or inclination to wash fabric before I quilt it....barely get it ironed when I make a block and/or quilt.

Besides it makes it look a little bit older when I do wash it and I do not use HOT water, EVER!

i never pre-wash but to each we are all different what a dull world this would be if we all did things the same way

I have done a total turn around about pre washing. When I first started quilting many years ago - I did pre wash everything, mostly to set the colors and just in case they did shrink. Then as the fabrics improved and the dyes became better - I stopped. I did a stack n wack and they said not to pre wash. It was fine - so I stopped washing.

After having an issue with a backing fabric really shrinking and reading about the chemicals used in fabric dyeing, especially batiks - I am back to pre washing, especially when I am working with kids.
