Cowpie, same here on the gifting. I think as I get better at quilting and quilt more closely the washed-after look will improve. Maybe I'll try next project not-pre-washed and test it out.
This has been an interesting discussion 'thread'! |
Ditto here!! shrinkage is only one part of the equation, excess dye, and chemicals used in the process.

I don't pre-wash, but I do saturate the fabric with diluted Best Press before I press it - you can watch it puckering up and getting smaller, sometimes. You don't want that happening after you've assembled your quilt - especially when the fabrics differ in shrinkage. Yikes - what a mess that could make of your careful piecing. :( |

That said I don't prewash either.....only flannels and the Quilting God's must be looking over my shoulder as I've never had any problems after quilting and washing. |
I pre-wash b/c most of my fabric comes from the thrift store and I don't know anything about how it was stored or what it was next to when it was donated. Also just like the way the fabric fills after it is washed. I always starch my fabric before cutting. It seams like I can cut it straighter.

I put mt FQ in a cloth bag to pre wash, with a color catcher, then I don't have the tangles, have less threads unraveling, and they are not as badly wrinkled.

That is a very good info thanks a lot :-)

I don't pre-wash anything at they all turn out looking OK after washing.I use 100% cotton for everything generally. Sometimes I use a wool blend wadding if it has been gifted to me.

DITTO!! |
I always pre-wash. The thought of different fabrics shrinking at different rates doesn't bear thinking about! Also, most of my quilts have photos in them so I don't want an antique look to spoil their appearance.
