I love the various "get squared" templates as I square my blocks up as I finish them.

I agree with cajunquilter2 about the 6 x 12 inch ruler. I use it more than any of the others. If I am doing pinwheels, I like my little 5.5 x 5.5 square up template. I think if you get what you mentioned you will be off to a good start. Look forward to seeing your creations. Don't forget to ask about anything and welcome to the board! Oh...you might have to go to a different shop to get a cat to hold down your fabric. :-)

Good lighting is a must. I have ott lights and love them but there are other brands out there.
