They are, but they are not funded by the government. They are separate. I asked our mail guy and he explained it to me. He said that is why they keep raising the prices. Apparently, one of the presidents passed something that caused them to have to rely on themselves, and he told me that they do not get money from the government. That is also why they are in debt and considering closing for a day a week. Also, the internet has hurt them because people pay online instead of using the post office.

If people pay online doesn't it still go to the USPS?

Sorry! what I meant by paying online is that a lot of people pay their bills either with a card, or Pay Pal, so they don't mail anything. Also, with email, they aren't buying stamps to mail letters, they just email them. I forget the number, but the Post Office gave a percentage of how much they lose because so many people don't buy stamps, they email or use another online means of paying bills, etc.

I agree, I've sent fabric in large manila envelopes at much less of a cost than the boxes. Check it out!

Me too! So now I've learned a worthwhile lesson. I almost always use the brown manila envelopes.

Oh yeah that's so true. I do pay my bills online and I know a lot of people who do and I almost never send letters anymore. So yeah that was a lot of lost revenue for them.

Just went into PO on Sat to get flat rate boxes. Sure enough I saw this thread and went and looked. EVERY one of them was Priority. They were the only ones out in the lobby. I guess I have to ask for the flat rate ones. I am going to get the manila envelopes.

Why is it that we all tend to immediately jump to the negative side of something when actually we are the ones in the wrong? The USPS provides us with boxes to ship things in...they only ask that we use their particular services when we use them. And then we get mad at USPS when we try to cheat? Something doesn't seem right to me about that. Ladies...we all need to play by the rules and if you don't know the rules, you need to ask. Thats just MHO.

but not eveyone was bashing the Po, some posts were defending it.

The Post office doesn't use tax money anymore, it is self funded all from postal revenue.
HOWEVER, the workers are federal workers, and the PO is under federal government jurisdiction and control, they can't sneeze without the Postal Commison's Ok.
