Mine is called Invis a Grip, there is enough of it in the package to take care of many rulers. It doesn't have to go completely to the edge, I left it 1/2" in all of the way around the edges.

A few weeks ago I got desperate and was having slipping problems with really little templates. I grabbed my quilters wax used for thread when hand quilting and I rubbed it onto the back of the template. Boy does that work well. You can put it just where you want it to go and it sticks without leaving any goo at all.

I use the little sandpaper dots. For the smaller rulers I place a dot at each corner. For my larger rulers, I place one at each corner and in the middle so the ruler is balanced out when I walk my fingers up the ruller as I am cutting.
My quilt teacher taught me that little trick. As your cutter moves up the ruler, walk your fingers up the ruler (away from where you are cutting) so as to keep it in place. Also, she taught me to place my cutter down on the mat and come at the ruler edge from a slight angle and continue that up the ruler. I have yet to damage a ruler or cut my fingers.
