If you want real accuracy, then PPing is the way to go IMHO!

If you want traditional piecing, then be sure to square up and measure up after every log addition.
Some of Eleanor Burns' patterns are terrific for explaining that, and giving you the measurements at every step/log

I just saw on Craftsy.com that there is a log cabin class by Marti Mitchell. All Craftsy classes are free to watch (not purchase) for Labor Day only!

I have made several log cabins and I always cut strips and square off after every couple of strips. It works for me.

I prefer to cut each length to size and I prefer Marti Michele's method, she has a class on Craftsy which I bought (today is watch all you want for free) and I was amazed at how accurate my blocks came out.

I have always cut to length and really tried to get every log sewn straight but always had some go off.

I bought the creative grid log cabin ruler and now every log is perfect and you don't have to cut the log fabric to size, you can use any size as long as it cover the log placement and it is cut on one side with a rotary cutter to get one straight edge.

I now enjoy making this pattern and it is perfect every time..

I just watched an awesome tutorial video :
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZayIGmzkMmo

And it makes 4 at a time with a strip method. Its all pictures and so easy to follow! Many variations shown at the end.
Could not fine a link to EB's so may be the same.

That how I did the coat I made with a log cabin variation. I might have to try paper piecing them though.
