I'm glad you asked this question I always had this problem with my sewing machine that's why I went to hand quilting because I had such bad luck with my puckers on the back of my quilts. Its nice to know that it may have been a tension problem.

I had the same problems when I used to pin baste, and used the binder clip method to hold my backing down--it was overstretched. Now that I spray baste, I just lay the backing flat on my large Dining room table and don't even tape it down--just smooth the layers by hand. Never had a pucker since.

I have been reading Sharon Schamber's way of sandwiching a quilt using two boards. I am really thinking this may be a good method for me to try. Got to figure out some details first though.
(Like where to do this....guess the dining room table may be my best bet....)
