    Your long stitch may not be balanced (tension). Also, are you stretching the fabric as you stitch? It can be the bias stitching, but I have a feeling it's the tension of the long stitch.

    Alternate sewing directions and starting in the middle are great suggestions. I would also suggest a cotton batting rather than a polyester one. The fabric clings to the cotton batting and that helps prevent puckering or pleats.

    Why not machine your strips to muslin or similar, join your blocks, and then make a sandwich with batting and backing so you quilt it all at once.
