I made a denim quilt and used zips from jeans to create a couple of pockets. I used the quilt as you go method and put the zips on before I sewed the blocks together. i also put an extra layer of fabric on the fabric side just to make that side stronger. This quilt was for my father inlaw and the pockets were for keys, wallet, phone etc. Even though I had never put zips in before and just winged it they turned out pretty well.

I was going to ask what pattern, what size is your favorite for donation quilts. I like your idea of pattern and colors for boys' quilts, and think I will start including an age appropriate book, Patrick McManus (They Shoot Canoes, Don't They) being one of my favorites for all ages. Thank you for the idea.

I do this all the time on quilted jackets. You quilt the quilt, make the pocket, quilt it if you want. turn the edges under on the sides of the pocket and press. Topstitch the pocket in place with the bottom of the pocket even with the raw edge. Bind your quilt and the bottom of the pocket will be caught in the binding.

I know some people who make pockets for the label and put some pieces of fabric and/or washing instructions in the pocket. I haven't tried it, but they put 2 sides in the binding. Another friend makes prayer quilts for friends having cancer treatments and she puts Bible verses in a pocket.

I made one for myself with a row of pockets across the top front. I made them so I could tuck in my remote, phone, etc. Then if I fall asleep watching TV they don't fall off my lap and end up on the floor.

I've put pockets on quilts in the past for a few different reasons ( game pieces on a game quilt, book pockets, pocket to hold a few pieces of the fabric on the quilt....) the pocket is applied after the quilting/ binding is done.
