I did that with my first quilt. I did not like the way it turned out. It did not hang correctly, and it was tough to get it to lay flat too. I like binding much better.

I couldn't figure out the binding process until I read it in one of Eleanor Burns' books. She makes it so easy.

In my opinion, binding finishes the quilt so nicely, if you have put so much work into a quilt, it deserves to be finished nicely. When I started quilting, the continuous binding scared me too, so I used a double fold binding, but sewed each of the four sides on seperately, first the two sides, then the two ends. Then the hand stitching it all down is basicly the same. It is very easy and comes out much nicer,IMO, than the envelope method. I'm sure what I described is impossible to understand, maybe someone else can do better.

Can someone tell me the pro's and con's. Is there a reason not to do that? I know so little about quilting I'm not even sure I'm asking the right question.
I think the easiest thing to do is spray baste to create the quilt sandwich (top, batting, backing), quilt, and then finish with a binding. This is not the same as the "pulling through" technique which, for me, never gave me a satisfactory finished product.

Once a quilt has been sandwiched and quilted, there are Youtube videos that show how to bind the edges. It can be done all by machine, or half by machine and the last step with blind stitching by hand.
