I have watched a dozen video's but cannot find one that shows me what to do on the back side of a sashing strip when trying to attach one already quilted block to another already quilted block. I am thinking I would like to use this technique with the BOM coming up later this year.....The Farmer's Wife Pony Club Quilt. Can anyone help me here?
Much appreciated if you can. I understand how the actual quilting goes....just not sure I understand the mechanics of attachment.....:) Thanks for your help.

You posted this question in '09 and no one has been able to help you? I am shocked. Georgia Bonesteel has made a career out of this very operation!
If I understand the situation, you would stitch as much of the back as you can then finger press the last seam and slip stitch it closed. Invisible stitching, like closing up a teddy bear.
Perhaps Georgia Bonesteel has a video on this. Good luck, please send a picture when you finish it.

There are a few different methods of QAYG so I would need to know which type you want to do. If it's the kind that has a strip of fabric sewn to the back and one to the front, I can probably help you. That's the type I've done the most of.

there are tutorials in this forum too. do a search in here and in Yahoo for some. i did one with the backing cut two inches larger and folded them to the front and stitched down. depends on the type block you have though. sounds like you like sashings better. good luck!

Yes, Please. I think this is exactly what would work for me as I do want to use a sashing......I am thinking that a narrow sashing....like a finished 1" or less?

    Here is what I do:
    Cut top strip (sashing) 1"
    Cut back strip 1 5/8"
    Fold & press back strip.
Align the raw edges of the backing strip with the edge of your block, strip goes in back.
Now align the 1" strip on top of the block, right sides together. From the top you will have: 1" strip face down, block face up and the folded strip.
Sew 1/4" seam. Use a walking foot if you have one.
Now sew the second block to the other long edge of your 1" strip, right sides together.
Sew 1/4" seam. Use a walking foot if you have one, take care not to catch the folded strip in your seam.
Lay the 2 blocks face down. If you cut your 1" strip correctly and sewed your 1/4" seams, the 2 raw edges of your block will butt together.
Now press the folded strip over to cover the seam. If you cut this strip 1 5/8" it will be just wide enough to cover the seams and have just a bit over. I press this well,(You can use washable glue to hold it if you like.) then Stitch in the Ditch from the right side to secure it.
You wind up with a 1/2" sashing strip on the front.

This is how I quilted these quilts, there's a close up of the back of one of the quilts. You really can't see the backing strip if you use the same fabric.

I cut my top binding at 1 1/4 inch and the bottom one at 1 5/8 inch. I sew the top one right sides together and the bottom one right sids together down one side of the block. Then I sew only the top binding to the second block ,RST. Then flip it over fold in the unstitched side of the back binding and hand stitch it in place. The two blocks should be just touching each other under the binding. Does that help?
