    My thought too. Interesting block.

The block is an Ohio Star Variation that I want to use in a lapquilt I'm making for hubby as a gift. It will be red and white.

I really don't want to use a template for the modified sections.

My first idea is to make a reqular sized hour-glass block and just cut it down to size. A waste of fabric, but I can't see another way besides templates or paper-piecing.

I thought maybe some of you would be share how you would go about making this section of the block. Btw, it's to be a red/white quilt. I just used these colors in EQ7 to count my pieces.

Thanks in advance for all suggestions.
Wouldn't it just be easier to make the appropriate size square and cut the corners off????

I would make to full hour-glass block and use the cut off sections in the border

Just to let you know what I did: I took the advise from most of you. I made the full hour-glass block and then trimmed. Thanks everyone, it turned out beautifully.

I've been making several quilts with snowballed squares. I turned each one and sewed back the other way 1/2" away. No I have a huge pile of HST's ready for something. Even if you just sew your cutoffs together you can make a mug rug or pot holders. Then no waste.

I'd do it just as bearisgray has drawn it. Seems easiest to me and I hate to waste fabric so cutting down a QST would hurt too much for me.

I agree with the method bearisgray posted. It look rather simple to piece the block that way.
