This was years ago and I can't say what brand it was, but here is my JoAnn's story. I had purchased fabric from the local QS but ran short. I went to JoAnn's hoping to find something to compliment the fabric and was surprised to find the same print from the QS. I purchased what I needed and went home with it. There is a difference between the QS and the JoAnn's. JoAnn's was a bit thinner in weight and the print was faded not a strong as the QS. I took the fabric back to the store and it was explained to me that in a fabric run there are basically three cuts from a run of a print. The first and last cuts are those cuts that go to your discount stores. They are very thin, the print may be off center, the colors may be out of line and not as crisp. The second and second to the last cut go to your fabric stores. They are stronger then the first cut. The third cut is the best cut. It is the part of the run that goes to your specialty stores. I now use this information to determine the quality of fabric I will use for the project I am working on. And if the project I want to work on should use the best quality and I can’t afford it, I’ll save and wait. Needless to say, right now I have a lot of projects I’m waiting on. It’s all good fabric and I use it all. Just a bit of quilt fabric trivia.

I have bought & used it several times. I always wash my fabrics when I get home from shopping. Never had a problem. Hope this helps!

If you're having to buy online, why are you buying so-so quality from JoAnnes when you can buy better quality, name brand fabric from on-line quilt stores? Then, you can have a better guess that the fabric will be top quality(usually). If you watch for clearance fabrics online the prices are usually cheaper than Joannes!

    This is true.

I spend quite a bit of money at Joann's so not trying to bash them, but if you are sceptical of buying from them check other online quilt stores. There are thousands of them out there and you can normally find material that is name brand that is as cheap, sometimes even cheaper than Joann's prices. I buy what feels good/looks good at a price I can afford and not feel bad about, sometimes I find it at Joann's and sometimes I find it online. Either way I am sure you will find something you enjoy sewing!

The closest Joann's to me is about 55 miles one way and the (not so) local quilt store is even farther than that. I feel your pain!

I have heard something very similar to this. Thank you for sharing.

Actually, 99% of my stash is all quilt shop quality fabric, generally purchase when it was offered on sale. I haven't purchased any fabric from Joann's in years. I am interested in collecting some calicoes for some of my future quilts and happen to remember seeing them on sale at Joann's so thought I'd start this thread to learn from others experiences.

Thanks so much for your thoughts, much appreciated.

Oh, I've been quite successful in finding many of my fabrics from many other online companies that have, yes, been as low or lower in price as the current sale at Joann's. This was just a curiosity of mine.

Sorry to hear your local shops are so far away, too.

Thank you very much. Nice to hear another positive report. Yes, it does indeed help.
