I think this would be a picture of my sewing machine. It has the zigzag feature and doesn't have needle position. I have made several quilts on it, and now after measuring my "quarter inch" seam, find it is the opposite of scant, like a few threads bigger. It seems like if I push the fabric over, it only barely touches the right sided feed dog. Am I not going to be able to do accurate seams on this? I'm hoping someone has a suggestion for me. Thanks.

You can use painters tape to make a line that is exactly 1/4 inch. the tape will come off easy and will not leave a residue.

here is where you can buy a 1/4 in. foot for your machine

I use moleskin to make the scant 1/4 seam guide on my older machines. I found a super wide rubber band to go all around the throat of my machine, the one with the free arm, that fits tight to make the 1/4" seam guide. That way I can move it out of the way when I sew something else.

I have seen this suggestion many times. Many people swear by this method. You no longer have to guess where the 1/4 mark is. Give it a try.

All the suggestions are wonderful, but if it barely touches the right feed dog wouldn't the fabric feed though uneven.

The responses to your question/problem so far are to do with lining up your fabric in some manner to get a scant 1/4" seam allowance, but what I'm getting from your post is that the machine needle and feed dogs will not LET you make 1/4" seam on that Singer machine. If I'm understanding you correctly, the only thing I would suggest is that you cut your quilt pieces large enough to accommodate a larger than 1/4" seam allowance (perhaps 1/8" larger????). If I'm misunderstanding what you are asking, then just forget I ever said a thing!

This isn't going to help too much, but I've seen items for machines that have wide feed dogs for things that get kadawank when sewing. It goes over the feed dog that is giving you problems. Try googling sewing machine feet, I think that's where I've seen it. I'm sorry, but I just for the life of me can't remember where I saw it. But I do know there's help out there!!

find out if your machine is high shank, low shank or slanted and go on clotilde.com and order a foot...they have them all

Thanks for all your thoughtful responses. Weezie and littlehud you are right in your thinking. I have a gazillion different feet. They all work great. There is no needle adjustment on this machine so it is what it is. The last quilt I made on it was around the world so I guess all the squares were off by just that little and on that pattern it didn't matter. I am curious about the gizmo that has wide feed dogs that go over the ones on the machine. Will check that out.
