I looked at a used Bernina 440QE last weekend. I have a Bernina 930 now and am looking to upgrade to get the BSR. Anyway, the machine makes noise when you turn it on and makes a louder noise when you increase the stitch speed. Is this normal? I'm used to the 930 and am not familiar with the electronic models.

Thanks for your answer. I wasn't sure if the noise was just the way electronic machines sound or if something was wrong.

It does make a start up noise but this should not be loud. sounds to me like it hasnt been serviced regularly..

When I first got my Bernina and turned it on it kept making a noise to.The bobbin winder was on as soon as I turned that off noise went away our Berninas have two separate motors so you can wind bobbin while sewing.Something you might want to double check.

That's a really good point. I would not have thought of that.

Mine makes a beep sound when I turn it on and then a beep each time I push buttons but like fidgety said it shouldnt be really loud. Perhaps the seller could take it to a dealer for a cleaning and you can see what is wrong with it and get an estimate for repairs if needed. I love mine!

Just checked it and you are right! The bobbin winder was on! Turned it off and all sounds well. The Quilting Board is AWESOME!

Hi! I'm in it with you, just got a used 440 and learning it on my own until dealer classes fit my schedule. There's the "Bernina burp" start up noise, but the noise you described didn't sound right to me. Glad u found the solution. I need to try the BSR soon. Scared, as silly as it is. I also have a 930, but I'm not well versed on that one either. I'm finding the 440 easy enough to learn, but want to learn all its tricks and piccadillos.
