    Default Question about fmq foot

I have not done hardly any fmq. Just practice on scraps. I have a Singer low shank machine and the fm foot has a bar that I am not sure if it needs to be on top of the screw that holds the needle, or under it. My walking foot goes on with the bar on top, but the fm foot doesn't rest on the fabric with presser foot lever down, unless the needle is all the way down. I have been breaking needles and I'm not sure if I'm flexing the needle or if the foot is on wrong. It doesn't seem to make contact with the quilt while I'm sewing. I'm not sure if it should. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks,Gina

Hi Gina! I'll have to wait until I'm home to go look at my fmq foot, but I can say that it doesn't usually touch the fabric.

As for needles breaking, have you tried adjusting the tension? Or it could be that your hands are moving too fast and that's bending the needle out of place.

How do the stitches look, especially on the back?

I took the bar off mine because I couldn't stand the hopping motion it made with the bar on it. Watch Leah Day on YouTube. She took hers off for the same reason.

Okay, I'm home, and the little bar does indeed go OVER the knob for the needle. It sounds like your foot is correct!

Thanks ladies for the replies. I ordered a different foot to see if maybe that might help. I did forget to put my stitch length to zero, so that might be part of my problem. I forgot about Leah. I do like her. I will go watch her and see what she does. Merry Christmas.

it definitely goes on top of the bar or it will not work well at all.
