    Default Question about needles

I'm sure this is a really stupid question, but I'm very new to quilting and sewing in general. Does it matter what brand needle I use in my Singer sewing machine? For some reason I thought you can only use Singer needles in Singers. Like I said... stupid. Please, can someone help me figure this out?

I mainly use Organ brand in my singer or the universal needles work fine.

No question is stupid! Yes, you can use any good quality needle in your machine. Look up Schmetz needles online and you will find lots of information about what needle to use with what fabrics. You can buy Schmetz at Joann's. You can also do an internet search of other brands of machine needles to see what is available.

I have a Singer Quantum and the needle threader won't thread the needle eye unless I use Singer needles but otherwise the other brand sews fine.

There are no stupid questions in quilting
Most machines will take any machine needle
I use size 12 sharps or topstitch, never universal (universals don't really have a sharp point and can leave small holes in the fabric).
I buy Titanium needles from Superior Threads #12. They last forever

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate you helping me get this straight. Does anyone have a recommendation on the best size needle for piecing?

The size needle depends on the ply and weight of the thread. Here is a great chart for matching thread to needles:

I agree the Titanium topstitch needles from Superior Threads are the best needles. They are Organ needles. https://www.superiorthreads.com/prod...chine-needles/

Thanks for that tip BellaBoo. I have a Quantum and I never could get the needle threader to work!

Are you serious!!?? I have a Singer Quantum 9960 and that threader NEVER lines up! But I use Schmitz or Universal needles (singer are more expensive!) but is that why the threader doesn't pull the thread..the eye is off just enough for it to not work? Wow. How stupid. Here I was thinking it was me or something I was or wasn't doing right. At lest I know if my vision gets worse.. I just have to buy Singer Needles!!! Good Grief, why is life so complicaetd!!!!!!

Thanks for the tip about the needle and thread chart. I usually use Schmetz needles in my Janome but may give the titanium ones a try.
