Instead of using sheets for your base, you could use tracing fabric (thin like interfacing but used for multi-sized patterns, purchased at Joann's) and use the sheets as the backing for your quilt. When I first started quilting in the early 70s, it was recommended to use sheets, especially old sheets, for the quilt backs.

What is the reason to use a base? I've been strip piecing for over 15 years and never used one. Is this new?

No, it's not new. A base is used when you are working with very narrow strips of fabric for string quilts.

Guess I've been breaking the rules again, eh? Some of mine are quarter-inch strips and they remain straight and true just fine without any base, even on the bias. Works for me so I'll just keep on keeping on. :)

I've used newspaper as a foundation. Then tear it away just like pp'ing when finished. I hand quilt and wouldn't like to quilt through the sheet.

It's just easier sometimes to use a base or foundation fabric. This way none of the fabric stretches out if you're using bias. It's just like paper piecing but without the hassle of removing the paper afterwards! For those of us who hate picking out the paper, fabric foundations are great. I'd suggest you do a search here for more info. if you're unsure about this method.
