The last time I asked a Mom about her preference for colors she said gray and yellow. I scraped the quilt I had in progress and made one in her colors. She loved it, but later told me the baby's nursery was pink!
From now on I will make multi-color, non gender specific baby quilts.

Please all babies should have a breathing detection mat to nap or sleep on until out of the crib. They are easy to transport to anyone's home. All the best day cares have them in the baby beds now. I keep one at my house for any baby visiting and sleeping here.

I agree with you that non-quilters do not look at our "creations" the same way we do, however, I have yet to give a baby quilt to anyone who did not thank me for making the quilt. My daughter used to ask me to make baby quilts for her friends and they were happy to get them. I once made a quilt for one of her friends, that I had to mail to her. When the package arrived, she looked at the address and was thrilled that I had made her the quilt. That's my usual reaction, and I often hear years later about how the kids loved the quilts. I do agree that the fabrics play a big part in how the quilt is received, however, I believe that babies love bright colored quilts as much as the parents do. I generally make simple 9-patch quilts, with squares of a focus fabric, I get to create using many different fabrics and I can give a gift that while I spent time on, I still had the pleasure of making the quilts. I would suggest that you continue to do what you love and keep quilting.

I think the premi quilts are more for the parents! It is really hard to walk into such a sterile environment everyday. I think they just brighten the place up!!

Don't stop making them, just remember that thy may not get used in the crib, but will have many other uses

I have a 1 month old granddaughter, as well as a 3 1/2 year old one. Son was getting baby ready to go home the other evening in car seat. I told him to pull the blanket up higher and he reminded me that quilts don't go higher than mid chest. They use baby quilts but not pulled up to neck...

Neo natal quilts not only brighten up the isolets, they often are given to the parents of a child that has to stay in the unit for a long time. Anything to make a sterile hospital environment more homelike. They have even been give to parents when a child doesn't make it.

Just because you don't cover up a baby doesn't mean there is no purpose for baby quilts. Seems to me they are decoration for the baby's room. The quilts I make aren't for the baby, really, they are for the mother. It makes them happy and the babies like to look at the colors.
