I put my quilts on a frame to baste them together and then I use a hoop to hand quilt. The important thing is to make sure the top and bottom fabrics are the same tention so you don't end up with "bubbles" or puckers of extra fabric where you don't want them.

I admit i am not WAY experienced, but all i ever do is hand quilt and i have never used a hoop ever. It just seems to get in my way and i can make smaller and more even stitches without one. :)

I have been doing hand quilting. Just started the last few months. I tried the hoop but it was in the way.I have done several small quilts/wall hangings.

I have looked at quilts with tiny stitches and quilts with bigger stitches.I like the bigger stitches.I think it is because I do red work. I like seeing the thread color outlining the blocks. I put about 5 stitches per inch.j

I never use a hoop. But I do "quilt as you go", for hand quilting, so I am never dealing with a huge piece of quilt at once.

I feel hand quilting is like your hand writting, you just do it the
way you feel you are comfortabale and your best stitches.

I used a hoop until my DH built me a frame. I now have 3 different frames, a hoop. I use all of them. I pin mine before I put it in the hoop. It helps keep the lining nice and tight. When you take it our it will have that quilting showing just like it should. What ever pleases you and you feel comfortable just go for it.
