Default Question on quilts on display

I have a quilt rack in my living room where I have 2 quilts that I made from my little boys blue jeans. They are now grown so I do enjoy seeing their little boy jeans hanging there.

My question is about fading. I have heard talk about quilts on racks fading in the area that is showing. Does that really happen or is it just worry? I have seen curtains fade on the sides against the windows, so I suppose it does happen.

Do you change quilts that are on display? Change how they are folded?

These are jeans, but I have some fabric with the jeans (made those circle rag quilts with cotton in the square)

    any thoughts?

I refold my quilts from time to time to change the fold line. If they are not in direct sunlight, they may not fade, especially blue jean fabric.

If you don't have the UV-blocking film added to your windows, change out or refold the quilts every 6-9 months. Actually, refolding is advised either way to protect stitches/fabric from too much stress in one place.

I would refold them ever so often. I had my repros get some indirect sunlight and they faded.

My neighbors quilts are always in a different spot. She just moves them and refolds often because her family really uses them. They may be on the bed or the back of a chair. She also has some jean quilts that are constantly relocated through out the house. When anyone spends the night at her house, she doesn't worry where to put them, they just grab a quilt and the floor works. Hers are so soft. Always look good too!!

I have hanging quilt racks in each of the three bedrooms, but they are on the same wall as the windows in those rooms, so I'm not worried about fading, but I do change them out twice a year.....air dry those that had been up, and store till the next time or put on the beds for use...depends...

My husband has been an installer of window film for many years and although UV light is a a big factor there are other factors as well.

I would refold and change them around, but enjoy them, don't put them away.

I had a wedgewood blue and cream hand pieced basket quilt. the sun came in for a few hours during the day, I lived in a basement. Never thought anything of it. after about 5 yrs, there is a horrible fade line on the blue. I was horrified.

I keep quilts out of direct sunlight and move and refold every 4-6 months. Those that are on walls are definitely not where window light ever comes in.

Fabric on the bolt fades on the edges from the store's overhead lights. Keep your quilts rotated. Any ambient light can fade them. I keep the shades drawn in my quilt room when not in use.
