I'm wondering if anyone has made this version of the disappearing 4 patch? I saw it on an old thread posted here. I cut a stack of 6" squares, turned them into the 4 patch blocks, and when I prepared to sit down and start cutting I realized I didn't know the measurements for making the cuts. Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated by this beginner quilter!

In Marsha McCloskey Block Party , this block is called Puss in the Corner. Easier to make it by cutting strips and sewing them together than whacking. At least that is how I make this block.

The D4P is cut at equal distance from the seam in both directions. This will give you a nine patch. Turn the N S E and W pieces 180 degrees. The distance from the seam that you make your cuts can vary depending on the look you want. Try a couple samples or draw them out on paper to see what you prefer

Uh oh....I already have them sewn together as 4 patch blocks...�� I guess in future attempts I'll try the strips method. And for now I'll have to just measure an equal distance as cjsews suggests. I'll eyeball it and aim for it to turn out as "even" looking as the photo I posted. Thanks!!

Using 6" squares, I think you would make the cuts 3" from the edge.

Once you sewed the 6 in. squares, each one was 5 3/4. In the second picture, I think that you can see that the top piece that you cut off is a bit wider than the other part of the top of the square. That is because the part that you cut off will be sewn to the bottom 2 squares. So, you cut the top 2 squares by leaving 2 3/4 attached to the bottom 2 squares; the cut off piece should be 3 inches, which will end up by being 2 3/4 inches after it is sewn to the bottom two squares. The same math will apply to the side piece that you cut off in the second row of pictures; you leave 2 3/4 inches with the main block and have a 3 inch piece left to sew to the other side of the block.
