    Yes 50% down is only fair. I got taken by not asking for a deposit, made a beautiful queen size quilt for a gal, when it was done her comment was"I don't remember requesting that quilt"??

    This is a good system. If you both agree, then it is perfect for you. Much better than dealing with money.

    I would at least charge the cost of the fabric as deposit if not more. Fabric isn't free and too precious now to waste on a cancelled order.

    My DH does woodcarvings and always asks for 50% down, especially if it is in anyway name specific for a customer. He has never had problems with people not wanting to put money down.

    If the lady is serious she should not hestate to place a deposit. Most people who make special order craft items do require a deposit up front.
