Questions about flannel

I've used flannel backing on many quilts. I also like the Warm and Natural batting. I've never had a complaint yet and most of the flannel backed quilts went to family in No. Michigan so they must be warm enough.

I would use flannel for the backing , as mentioned it does help it from sliding. I would also use a light weight batting ( poly), it will provide the warmth with out as much weight as a cotton batting.
Do embroider or find a method of permantly putting the recipents name on the quilt. So many personal items just seem to get "lost" in these facilites.

I have made alot of blankets with cotton on one side and flannel on the other and batting.
Then just tied them with embroidery thread 3 ply. My granchildren call it summer and winter.
Th littlest say cool and warm. They are very wash & wear & used, I do the same with the pillows to match.

First I love flannel. It's so soft & warm! If you can find some wool batting on sale, it is wonderful. It's warm in the winter, cool in the summer (at least cooler than cotton 'cause it breathes) & needles wonderfully. I believe the combination of wool batting & flannel would be great for an elderly person.

Thank you to all those that responded. It seems to be the coinsensus that a lightweight batting be used. Also glad that I found out that I should pre-wash the flannel. You guys are the BEST!

Remember that "flannel" is a finish, it does not define fiber content. You can find all cotton or poly cotton blends. And some other blends. And you can find all weights, from very thin, loosely woven to quite heavy suiting weight flannel.
A good heavy suiting weight flannel might not need much batting.
