You might have your friend contact a well-known, established company that handles estate sales in the area. I seems to me that those companies here are knowledgeable about pricing items such as this. Possibly they could be combined with another sale, for a commission cost.

A call to the International Quilt Study Center and Museum at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, may give you some of the information for which you're searching, including donation options. http://www.quiltstudy.org/

quiltappraisers.org is the Professiobal Association of Appraisers-Quilted Textiles. You'll be shocked at the low value, though. I have several old quilts that I've had appraised. One is from the 1880s and is in excellent condition. The insurance blue is only $450 and the insurance value is more than twice the sale value. I've bought several of my quilts at auction for less than $100. Go to EBay and look at the recently sold prices.

American Quilters Society Appraisers are listed on the above site. There are several in MO.

I contacted an AQS appraiser living in the St Louis area. She says that she works by the hour and can get a lot of appraisals done in an hour or two. Her hourly fee is reasonable so I have forwarded her email reply to my contact. Oh I sure would love to be there for the appraisal!

Thank you everyone for all of the great suggestions.

25 antique quilts never been used? I hope I'm not the only one who sat up on reading that! You've got to keep us posted on what happens with this one!!

I'll be watching this thread. My brother has about 50 hand done, two color quilts which his wife collected. Haven't made a decision as to how to sell. I think a general auction is the worst place.

You could contact Cookie Martin at batiksplus.com: she is in the St Louis area and has experience having quilts appraised (not by her, but I know she had some appraised a while back) and could direct you to someone in the area.
