"Quilt Assistant" software
I came across an article about "Quilt Assistant", a free software program that turns your photos into quilt patterns. Has you used this software? What are your thoughts about this software?
I'm thinking about downloading and using it to make a quilt of my garden and dog but was wondering if I would be wasting my time.
Thanks for your opinions.

I have downloaded that program and have played around with it. I like it and I think it could be very helpful but it, like most things, takes, time to learn. I have had to have the manual next to me whenever I wanted to use it but I have not invested the necessary time yet. It has a paper-piece feature that I really like.

Thanks for all your input. The software can be downloaded at http://quiltassistant.com/free-quilt-design-software ....
I downloaded the pdf manual to study before downloading the program but found, like Sailorwoman, that it takes practice and there is a learning curve. I will do that when I don't have so many distractions.
From the website:
QuiltAssistant is free design-software that can help you to turn your photos into quilts. Rather than the traditional approach of breaking up the photo into little squares ('watercolor style') it allows you to divide the photo into pieces of arbitrary size and shape.
QuiltAssistant is not designed to be a cheap alternative to commercial software like Electric Quilt or Quilt-Pro. It is not geared toward the design of complete block-based quilts, nor does it have libraries of blocks or fabrics to play with. Instead, it focuses on specific tasks like turning photos into quilts and quickly drafting quilt blocks or pacer piecing patterns.

Another alternative is to upload a photo to the Victoria and Albert Museum website. There you can choose from 3 different resolutions and whether or not you want only squares or squares and triangles. Voila! You get a diagram of your photo "digitized" into the resolution you chose and the colors needed. There is also a count of how many squares and triangles of each color you need (you pick the size). No software required, just a photo and your browser.

It looks like it could be a lot of fun if you like the "cubist" look. It's not for me but I'll bet anyone who puts the effort into it could make something great using a garden and a dog! What's not to like about dogs and gardens, no matter the shape. Good luck.
