    Default Quilt backing seam

Is it an absolute no no to seam down the center of the backing of a lap size quilt?

I do it. Just do a 1/2" seam & press open.

I don't see why it would. I've done it before when necessary.

It's a no no if it is going to be judged. If not it is up to you. You might enjoy looking through some of the pictures in the thread- Show us your backside. Put the title in the search box.

Got a laugh about showing your backside.

Found it under the thread show off your backside. Loved to see all the pictures. This brings me to another question. Do all the pieces need to run the same way of the grain? Can some pieces run length of grain and some the width of grain?

I don't put it in the middle because I'm anal about how the back looks. LOL!!! I will have the seam offset, of have the widest piece in the middle w/ 2 seams towards the outside...like in 1/3rds.

I don't worry about length or width of grain unless - it's a directional print or some rare fabrics have slightly different colour in opposite directions.

I use the pieces however they fit best.

I have even put a seam up the back of a quilt I entered in a quilt show. It got a first place ribbon, so I guess it isn't such a bad thing all the time. About half the time I have seams up the back, and I don't even care if it is right up the middle. I quilt my own on my domestic, so that probably makes a difference. I know that long arm quilters prefer not to have a center seam up the length of the quilt. (I also SITD, and have won ribbons with those quilts...no real rules in quilting...just serious suggestions, I think. )

If I was making a quilt only to go in a quilt show though, I probably would avoid seams in the back. But my quilts are to use, and the quilt show entries are only really "for Show and Tell." However, if a judge wants to give one of my quilts a ribbon, I will take it...
