It is mostly a matter of personal taste. As a handquilter I prefer a wholecloth back if I can get it or at least as few pieces as possible. I usaually purchase the widest fabric I can get when it is on sale. If it happens to be a small print that can be a plus as it also helps hide quilting mistakes. When I was doing a lot of quilting for other people I stocked up on wide fabrics every chance I got as I usually supplied the backing.

As a new quilter who is learning FMQ it was recommended to use a busy patterned fabric for the back so any mistakes will not show as much. Maybe when I get better I'll use solid color fabric to show off my quilting. But that may take awhile!

I almost always use John Flynn's diagonally pieced backing. It usually saves a bit of fabric, it's only one seam, and won't fold or roll with the seam on itself.
