My oldest is going to be starting college this fall and like you, I need to send him off with a quilt.
I'm only going to do something simple, 'cause I can't imagine that a quilt bound for a guy's dorm room is going to receive much TLC if you know what I mean.
I will use junk food fabrics for his quilt! These will definitely be included. And I think the fact that most of them are on a black background is the ultimate in practicality.

Thanks all of you for the suggestions. I am anxious to start the quilt. He graduates in May, but if it isn't done, I can give it to him later.

Have the same issue here. I'm planning to do a log cabin in blacks and golds (school colors)with the blacks in the center - sort of barn raising pattern. Then might applique the school letters there once all the quilting is done. Then again, I'm planning 18 months out almost so I have some time but do need to get moving on this.
