Fabric Galore

I have been quilting for 40 years and I find that making a quilt label is the most frustrating part for me. I usually include the name of the recipient, the year the quilt was made and then my name. I have tried all different ways to create a label and I'm not happy with any of them. Does someone have an idea on an easy and endurable label?

Me too!
I'm not crazy about making them at all. In fact I didn't for years.

But now, there are so many ways to make labels. And lots of quilters around me to wag their collective finger at me and say "you must include a label...."

So now, my favorite way (depending on who is getting the quilt), is to print a design onto fabric then fill in the info with a permanent micro pen and stitch it into the corner of the quilt. I've printed a few out already just to speed things up when the time comes.

this is also one of my favorites for a very fast, easy label - just hand print the info directly onto a piece of scrap fabric, and sew it into the corner. (It's easier to write on fabric when I iron it to freezer paper first)

I tried embroidering them, both by hand and with a machine, but I wasn't very handy with either.
I also tried just sewing (fmq) a label into the binding of one. Success was iffy.

Since then, I've found a few other cute pictures to turn into label blanks.
Also, I'm considering ordering custom ribbon with the info printed on it. I saw someone post that idea here a while ago, and I loved it.

I too love using the Pigma marking pens. The #3 or #5 work best for me. And the idea of sewing the label into the corner as part of the binding process is great - I do that sometime. My labels usually include the quilt name and/or pattern name, my first initial with last name, city, state, and month and year. I got some really cute fabric labels from Sweetwater. Otherwise I use a plain Kona or Bella white or cream fabric. My labels generally aren’t too big, which may be different from what others do.

I have embroidery machines and software to design with, so all my labels are machine embroidered.
They will last as long as the quilt ( I'm assuming!). I can add small designs as well as text...I don't think I would be successful with the printing method.

I felt my efforts at labels for quilt all ended up looking hokey. Got a chance to buy a used Brother combo sewing/embroidery machine. It has the small hoop only, and it does limit how much I can include, but it works for me! Love the more professional look of the embroidered labels. (Just my opinion).

I designed a simple label on Photoshop and had it printed by Spoonflower. I think I was able to fit 15-20 labels on a FQ for about $10. Took me about 10 days to get them. I left room on the label to write in the recipient’s name and the year with a fabric pen.

Fabric Galore

Thanks Mermaid. I bought several sets of fonts for my Janome 15000 and I can't figure out how to get the fonts onto my USB drive in a format that my sewing machine will recognize. I would prefer this method also because I have had some of my labels fade when I use pigma pens. Guess I will go to LQS tomorrow and find out what is wrong with my software.

I am definitely label challenged. I finally decided to get printed labels from Wunderlabel. My little tiny labels just say, Made with love by, Tish Overly, Gulf Breeze, FL. No name for the quilt, no date and no dedication. I don't make quilts for a specific person, I just have a stack of quilts that I let a favored person choose from. I found that when I had a date on them, a person would think, oh, that's an old quilt. Even thought it was only 2 or 3 years made. If I decide to donate a quilt, I can quickly remove my little labels so they are anonymous.

This is what I have been doing now for many years I made the initial label and alter it for name and date. I admit the last gifted quilt the label was not ready for the graduation open house. I gave the girl the label weeks later and and she sewed in onto the quilt.
