All this talk about math makes my brain hurt! Just trim all to a consistent size & live with it!

The original question was what the correct size of center should be, and that is just a smidge under 6 1/2". The "add 7/8 to the finished size" doesn't apply here because she is not making half square triangles. Hope this helps.
Thanks the pic sure helped. I was needing an Alieve too.

Anyhow, I cut four half square triangles from square blocks measuring 4 7/8 by 4 7/8. And then I sewed them together to make a square. I was following a pattern in a book (Quiltmaker's Gift). I'd like to square up my squares, but it doesn't say what the finished size of the block is...

I've added a diagram here if it helps any. Each arrow is pointing to a side of the triangle which was 4 7/8 inches (before the were sewn together).

Can anyone tell me what the size of this block SHOULD be? It's somewhere between 6 and 6 1/2 inches.
Don't see what we're supposed to be seeing.

If the whole quilt is half square triangles, don't worry what you're supposed to have. Check about 5 or 6 pieced squares. Find the largest square you can get that is common to all. Remember to use a ruler that is giving you a diagonal mark from at least one corner. (didn't realize until the last couple weeks that some folks didn't realize a diagonal was necessary to trim a square.)

Trim your squares up to a common number, maybe 4 1/2". Then proceed with your pattern. Or simply trim down to the size you're told to use.

I flunked trig-----------and quilt math is simple for me.
How about measuring the smallest...instead of the largest?
    Can't add fabric...

Measure across from side to side and up and down on the SMALLEST correctly sewn block. Find a square ruler to fit on it cutting only slivers off.
Then using the same ruler, trim all the others to be the same size.
Plastic square rulers come in 6" and 6 1/2" sizes.

iT takes a lot more care, but you can mark other rulers with tape, and use them to trim your blocks.

I'm thinking the finished block is 6.5" and the original guide assumed you were sewing 3/8" seam allowance.

Go to Quilter's Cache and look at the pattern for Corn and Beans It is all done in hst and the math is all figured out for a finished 12 inch block.

I've always been told to add 7/8" to the square of the finished size block.

Thus diagonally joining two 4 7/8" squares would result in two finished 4" half square triangle blocks.
