My grandmother made summer quilts. She used them in place of bedspreads. She used to change the curtains from drapes or heavier weight fabric to something light and airy for summer as well. I loved to go to her house because it made you feel like you were in a warm and cozy place in the winter and airy and free in the summer.

I have always made summer quilts with no batting but put thin cotton fabric in between the top and the backing. It is light weight and thin and nice for the summer.

I have one downstairs right now. Summer quilts is what my grandmother's called them. Also, a traditional Cathedral Window quilt doesn't have batting because of the many layers. Crazy quilts don't usually have batting & other foundation pieced quilts may have only used the paper or muslin as batting.

You can see my quilt without batting in the Picture file. The Title is called "Raggy, scrappy quilt" It is a single layer with border.

Yes are called summer quilts you often find them in the south
