I would give him some quilting magazines or books to thumb through and ask him to put post-it notes on quilts he likes. That may help narrow down colors and types of patterns he would like. Just be forewarned that he'll probably pick out the hardest, most complicated patterns! You might want to prescreen and handpick those magazines and books in case you don't feel up to a Mariner's Compass.......

I wanted to make my DH one so took him to joanns and said pick out a fabric you like, boy was i surprised, it was asia with big white birds. Bought it and now getting the other fabrics to go with it. It was not what I expected for him to pick out. He is a lot like your son in interests, fishing, cars, boats, cars and he was a mechanuc. Take him shopping.

Check out what colours you think would look nice in his place & make a nice easy one like this. I made it for my DD's wedding, you just make a small square & surround it with a lighter or deeper tone border.

    You guys are all great!!!
I looked up Storm at Sea, and looks like it has some paper piecing to it? I've never done it, and am wanting something fairly quick.
Barb, your quilt is beautiful! But I made a similar 'ribbon' quilt for my DDIL, and he'd probably think it was a girly pattern because of that. lol!!
Sewnsewer2, your quilt is really wonderful too!! I really love how you did it!!!
I've not done the D9p, and am not sure how hard that is. And I think the Mariners Compass is a bit beyond me..... lol!!!!
Ghostrider, I'm really liking your Gentlemans Fancy!! I went to quilters cache, and it's shown using more girly colors. Uncreative me wouldn't have thought how it could look with more manly colors! Thanks so much for posting the pictures of it!!
Prism99, I ought to make him pick out a pattern! He kind of backed away from even talking about it at all. I think he thinks it's weird as it's to be a birthday present, and here he is knowing about it. lol!!!!!
I think I'm leaning towards the Gentlemans Fancy. Now if I could get all of you to go and help pick out the fabric too..... lol!!!!!
I know I get totally wacked when making quilts for my kids. I think I put too much emotional significance into them.... Maybe my wackyness over making their quilts will spur them all on to get me EQ6 for Christmas!! lol!!!
Thanks so much, for all the ideas!!!! :D :D

    Diana

I made this quilt for my oldest son--it is REALLY easy. If you are interested in it I could tell you how to do it.

I am making this quilt in a queen size for my youngest son. I am making it in blue, green and brown. The pattern was free on the internet and also very easy to make.

I think just about any quilt you make can be masculine if you use "manly fabrics"

Look at the first posted here. She made it for her brother.

 Did you steal my son???? My oldest is ALL of the things you mentioned!?!?

Well, maybe not. I can't imagine my son ever wanting a "classy" quilt. Mine would get old muscle cars and hound dogs all the way.

Can't wait to see what yours gets.

Hi Diana - do you fancy trying a One Block Wonder? You could pick a large print in one of the themes he's interested in... :D

Thanks so much, all of you!!! :D :D
I think I'm going to do the Gentlemans Fancy. I even like the colors they've used on quilters cache, just have to take out the floral fabric... lol!!!
Marcia, you ought to put on here how you did your quilt, as I'm sure more than me wants to know!! I love it!!! :D
Lisa, your son could be brother to all three of mine! lol!!!
My youngest son (beginning of Nov) is easy - Card Trick! As he loves going to the casino! lol!!!!
Once I get done with the birthday quilts, I'm going to try the others!! - Mariner's Compas, OBWs, etc!! I have eight to do between the end of October through the beginning of February, then a bit of a lull....
    Thanks again!!!! :D :D
