    Addicted to Quilting

    She learned to quilt on Monday.
    Her stitches all were very fine.
    She forgot to thaw out dinner.
    so we went out to dine.

    She quilted miniatures on Tuesday.
    she says they are a must.
    They really were quite lovely.
    But she forgot to dust.

    On Wednesday it was a sampler.
    She says stippling's fun.
    What highlights! What Shadows!
    But the laundry wasn't done.

    Nine patches were on Thursday -
    Green, yellow, blue and red.
    I guess she really was engrossed;
    She never made the bed.

    It was wall hangings on Friday,
    In colors she adores.
    It never bothered her at all,
    That crumbs were on the floors.

    I found a maid on Saturday,
    My week is now complete.
    My wife can quilt the hours away;
    The house will still be neat.

    Well, now it's only Sunday,
    I think I'm about to wilt.
    I cursed, I raved, I ranted,
    Cause the MAID has learned to QUILT!

    Too cute! And somewhat true...after all, we MUST have our priorities!

    This quilting poem is a little more on the serious side, but good nontheless.

    GramMER

    A CERTAIN MAGIC
    by Marcella Bechtel
    Forty or more long years ago,
    A lady I never knew
    Lovingly pieced this quilt top,
    And added the border, too.
    Each curve fits in exactly,
    It's made so carefully,
    But she died ere she could quilt it
    For her great-grandson, you see.
    She made quilts for all her children,
    And all their children, too;
    But there wasn't time to finish
    All that she meant to do.
    So this lovely top was left behind
    After she'd gone to rest;
    It was handed down to his mother,
    And stored in a cedar chest.
    It stayed in perfect condition,
    Though forty years it's been
    Since she made it for my husband--
    He was just a baby then.
    Now it is stretched out before me,
    And my needle moves to a tempo,
    Quilting the top she made
    So many years ago.
    I feel as if I know her--
    This lady I never met;
    For the cloth holds a certain magic
    Of love that is living yet.
    I know it makes her happy
    That at last it's being done
    By someone else who loves him--
    Her gift for her great-grandson.

    I love both of these. The first one..haha...definitely funny. And the second one, Grammer, it is so sweet.

    GramMER, I loved your poem too. I got to quilt a top that my Grandmother made for my sister. My Mom kept it store for at least 40 years. When I found out, I quilted it and gave it to my sister. She cried, and then so did me and my Mom. It was so cool to be close to my Grandmother again. Thank you for that. It was very special to me.

    Not all family members can appreciate the time it takes to do a quilt top or the quilting for that matter. In fact only a few in most families can appreciate the love and care that goes into just being family.

    I try to remember that when I am dealing with my children and my children's families too. I try to be the way I want them to remember me.

    "Things" will eventually rot and go the way of all material, but memories, and people are forever. Why are we quilting? For warm memories.
